Girls’ Indoor Track

The Westbrook girls’ indoor track team competed at Shoreline Conference League Meet No. 2 at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Jan. 26 and finished in eighth place with a total of 24 points.

Danyelle Engels recorded a first-place finish in the shot put with a distance of 31 feet-2 inches at the meet. Tirzah Blomquist finished in fourth in the long jump with a distance of 15 feet-1.5 inches, and Avery Bauman took fourth place in the pole vault by clearing 8 feet for the Knights. Westbrook’s 4x800-meter relay team of Halle Baron, Cierra Brundage, Elizabeth Gallagher, and Bauman grabbed fourth place with a time of 11:45.01.

Boys’ Indoor Track

The Westbrook boys’ indoor track team participated in last week’s Shoreline Conference League Meet and scored eight points to finish tied with Creed and Hale-Ray for eighth place.

Michael Gingras took fourth place in the pole vault with a height of 10 feet-6 inches for the Knights. He also placed fourth in the high jump by clearing a height of 5 feet-4 inches.

Girls’ Basketball

The Westbrook girls’ basketball team lost its two games in last week’s action to move to 5-6 on the season.

On Jan. 25, the Knights hit the road to face Morgan and dropped a 54-49 decision. It was a close game that saw both teams trade baskets throughout the night. After the first quarter, the game was tied 13-13. The Huskies then took a 25-21 lead in the second. After the break, Westbrook trimmed the Morgan lead to a single point in the fourth quarter. However, as the final seconds ticked down, the Knights had to foul to stop the clock, and they wound up losing the game by a 54-49 final. Junior captain Savannah Marshall had a double-double with 25 points and 18 rebounds for Westbrook, while Gabby Ehlert scored a season-high 10 points.

Head Coach Kelly Landino thought her team put up a good fight, but said that Morgan’s ability to move the ball and spread the scoring around made the Huskies tough to beat.

“Morgan had very balanced scoring and they moved well on offense,” Landino said. “We played a tough, close game, but unfortunately had to foul down the stretch, and lost at the end.”

On Jan. 27, the Knights headed to Durham to face Coginchaug, where they took a 67-17 defeat. Ruby Asby, Erin Metcalfe, and Ehlert each scored five points, and Carolyn Bauman added two points for the Knights.
