Rams’ Girls’ Track Finishes 1st, Boys 2nd at Shoreline Invite

Girls’ Indoor Track

The Old Saybrook girls’ indoor track team finished in first place at the Shoreline Conference Coaches Invitational, which was held at Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven on Jan. 20. The Rams scored 103 points to secure first place by a wide margin over runner-up Stonington with 54.5.

Tyra Finkeldey was victorious in the pole vault by clearing 11 feet, and she was also part of another first-place finish with a 4x400-meter relay team that included Dylan Adams, Grace Hanratty, and Jessica Stratton. The quartet’s first-place time was 4:24.29. The Rams’ 4x800 relay of Jessica Stratton, Hanratty, Tehra Givehand, and Emily Stratton also nabbed first place with a time of 10:08.81.

Jessica Stratton earned second in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 3:11.32, and Hanratty had a second-place finish in the 600 with a 1:41.53. Annea Thaci finished the 55-meter hurdles in 9.0 seconds for second place, and she also took second in the long jump with a distance of 16 feet-3 inches. In the high jump, Thaci placed third at 4 feet-10 inches, putting her one spot behind teammate Rachel Vigorita, who had the same height.

Boys’ Indoor Track

The Rams competed at last week’s Shoreline Conference Coaches Invitational and earned second place with an overall score of 71.75 points--just 6.25 points behind Stonington for the top spot.

Jalen Johnson had a big day for Old Saybrook with second-place finishes in the 600 (1:25.56) and the 300 (36.89). Johnson was also part of a first-place 4x200 relay quartet that included Carlos Chacon, Dan Almada, and Max Thomas th at finished with a time of 1:38.91.

The 4x800 relay crew of Xavier Rios, Lance Sigersmith, Luke Hanratty, and Cooper Luciani also earned first place with a time of 8:49.59. With a time of 3:42.86, the 4x400 relay of Rios, Eric Sultini, Hanratty, and Luciani grabbed third place. Sultini ran to a second-place finish in the 600 with a time of 1:25.56, and Ryan Dubord cleared 5 feet-10 inches in the high jump for second place.

Boys’ Basketball

The Rams extended their win streak last week by picking up a 62-55 victory at Amistad on Jan. 19. With the win, Old Saybrook has won its last nine games and now has a record of 9-1 on the season.

Girls’ Basketball

Old Saybrook took defeats against Westbrook and Morgan last week to put its record at 6-6 on the season.

On Jan. 17, the Rams went up against Westbrook on the road and lost 41-38. It was a close contest the whole way as both teams scored 11 points in the first quarter, and Westbrook held a 23-20 halftime lead. Old Saybrook evened the score at 29 in the third quarter, but the Knights outscored Old Saybrook by three points in the fourth to come away with the win.

Two days later, Old Saybrook was back home to host Morgan and dropped a 41-32 contest against the Huskies. The Rams got out to an early lead in the game and entered the second half with a 19-15 advantage. However, Morgan outscored Old Saybrook 16-7 in the third quarter and led the rest of the way.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The East Haven-Old Lyme-Old Saybrook-East Hampton boys’ ice hockey squad took its first loss in its last six games by dropping a 6-2 decision to Guilford on Jan. 20. The defeat put the Yellowjackets’ record at 4-3-1 thus far this season.

Guilford netted the first four goals of the game, before Matt Henderson broke open the scoring for East Haven late in the second period. Alec Speirs added a goal late in the third period for the Yellowjackets, who saw goaltender Matt Twarowski record 36 saves in the loss.
