Morgan's Basketball Teams Each Notch a Pair of Victories

Boys’ Basketball

The Morgan boys’ basketball team played two games last week and was victorious in both of them to improve to 3-7 on the campaign. The Huskies earned a one-point win versus Hale-Ray and then blew out Grasso Tech in last week’s matchups.

On Jan. 15, the Huskies were at home against Hale-Ray and won a nail-biter by the final score of 48-47. Morgan held a 12-9 lead after the first quarter, before Hale-Ray put together a strong second quarter to lead 29-24 at the half. The Huskies chipped a little off the lead in the third to close it to 37-34. Then in the fourth quarter, Morgan outscored the Noises 14-10 to get the victory by a single point.

Senior Patrick Markovics led Morgan in scoring with 14 points, and he also had three rebounds, an assist, and a steal on the night. AJ Fritz scored four points, grabbed six boards, and six assists. Freshman Zach Johnson had eight points, and Miles Vogl added five points to go with two boards and two steals.

Two days later, the Huskies hosted Grasso Tech won by a much more comfortable cushion, defeating the Eagles 82-49.

Girls’ Basketball

The Huskies posted victories against Hale-Ray and Old Saybrook last week to improve their record to 6-5 on the season.

On Jan. 15, the Huskies had a road matchup against Hale-Ray and earned a lopsided 51-19 victory. After jumping out to an 18-7 lead in the first quarter, Morgan held the Noises scoreless in the second quarter en route to the win. Freshman Caitlyn Donadio led all scorers with 16 points on the night to along with six steals, three rebounds, and three assists. Annalyse Olcott followed with 12 points, and she also provided five boards and five steals. Joelle Vuilleumier hauled in six rebounds, while Brianna Navarra snagged 10 steals in the win.

On Jan. 19, the Huskies headed to Old Saybrook for a contest against the Rams and secured a 41-32 victory. Old Saybrook got out to an early 13-7 lead in the first quarter, but the Huskies tightened the Rams’ lead to 19-15 by the half. In the third quarter, Morgan took a 31-28 lead that it added to in the fourth to come away with the win. Navarra, Kylie Clifton, and Leah McComiskey led the Huskies with 10 points apiece. McComiskey also had nine rebounds, two assists, and a steal; Navarra had five boards and six steals; while Donadio had five points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals for Morgan.

Girls’ Indoor Track

Morgan competed in the Shoreline Conference Coaches Invitational at the Floyd Little Athletic Center on Jan. 20. The Huskies placed seventh overall as a team by scoring 28 points in the meet.

The girls’ 4x800-meter relay team of Isabella Raunado, Maura Kelly, Allison Gardner, and Kate Daley claimed second place with a time of 10:49.46 for Morgan. Also earning second was the 1,600 sprint medley relay team of Alyssa LeMay, Taylor Wyatt, Courtney Viglione, and Gardner (4:33.23). The quartet of Viglione, Gardner, Raunado, and Kelly finished with a time of 4:25.8 to place third in the 4x400 relay. Daley earned third place in the 3,200 with a time of 12:14.18.

Boys’ Indoor Track

The Huskies took part in the recent Shoreline Conference Coaches Invitational and finished 14th place with a total of 14 points.

Zach Tuccitto, Justin Mucha, Chayse Lofgren, and Thomas Southwood were part of a 4x800-meter relay team that finished with a time of 9:07.63 to take second place for the Huskies. Juan Avila earned sixth place in the long jump with a distance of 18 feet-11 inches.
