H-K Boys’ Swimming Picks Up Two Wins; Ice Hockey Defeats Newtown in OT

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

The Haddam-Killingworth boys’ swimming and diving team picked up a pair of victories in its two recent meets. The Cougars won against both Waterford and Lyman Hall-Coginchaug in last week’s contests to improve to 3-2 on the season.

First, the Cougars defeated Waterford 82-66 on Jan. 16. H-K’s 200 medley relay of Jake Torello, Max Revis, Michael Morman, and Kyle Mazziotti won its race with a time of 1:55.15, while Simon Brown, Nate Carlson, James Clemente, and Niko Yepes were second (2:10.91). Zach Houlton won the 200 freestyle (1:53.99) with Morman in second (2:02.99), Torello won the 200 individual medley (2:21.69) and Eli Houlton was runner-up (2:24.49), and Chris Garrelts won the 50 free (25.38) with Yepes in second (27.57). In the 100 butterfly, Eli Houlton finished in first place (58.05) and Clemente was in second (1:07.10). Mazziotti took first in the 100 free (51.66) and Morman came in second (54.92) for H-K. Zach Houlton (5:13.03) was the 500 freestyle winner, and the runner-up was Carlson (6:20.98).

In exhibition races, the 200 freestyle relay of Revis, Garrelts, and the Houlton brothers were first (1:43.11), Mazziotti took the 100 backstroke (1:00.47) and Torello was second (1:00.76), Revis won the 100 breaststroke (1:08.76) and Garrelts was second (1:16.09). Also, the 400 free relay of the Houltons, Morman, and Mazziotti was first (3:38.76), while the grouping of Jonah Freeman, Ryder Wink, Carlson, and Yepes placed second (4:26.31).

On Jan. 19, H-K bested Lyman Hall-Coginchaug by the score of 93-71. The 200 Cougars’ medley relay of Torello, Revis, and both Houltons finished first (1:52.79), Mazziotti won the 200 free (1:54.56) and Morman was second (2:01.43), Zach Houlton prevailed in the 200 IM (2:12.18) and Torello was the runner-up (2:22.18), plus Eli Houlton took first for the 50 freestyle (24.50) and Garrelts finished second (24.53). Eli Houlton was also the winner in the 100 butterfly (1:00.56) with Morman in second (1:03.66). Zach Houlton finished first for the 100 free (53.95) and Garrelts came in second (55.62). Mazziotti was the 500 freestyle winner (5:21.16), while Jonah Freeman finished as the runner-up (6:13.16). Additionally, the 200 freestyle relay of Revis, Garrelts, Morman, and Mazziotti won its race in 1:39.24, Torello took the 100 backstroke (1:03.50), Revis earned the top spot in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.75, exhibition), and the 400 freestyle relay of Morman, the Houltons, and Mazziotti finished first (3:39.61, exhibition).

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The Lyman Hall/Haddam-Killingworth/Coginchaug (L/H-K/C) boys’ ice hockey team defeated Newtown last week to move to 7-3 overall on the season.

The Trojans earned a 3-2 overtime victory over Newtown on Jan. 19 with all three goals coming courtesy of Lyman Hall student Scott Bradley.

Girls’ Basketball

H-K is now 2-9 after losing games against Coginchaug and East Hampton last week.

The Cougars took a 59-36 defeat to Coginchaug on Jan. 16. Three days later, H-K faced East Hampton and lost by the score of 51-29.

Boys’ Basketball

The Cougars dropped a pair of recent contests and are now 0-11 on the campaign.

H-K took a 75-51 defeat to Coginchaug on Jan. 15. The Cougars then took a 94-43 loss against East Hampton four days later.
