Old Saybrook Boys’ Basketball Makes States; Carlo Gets a Goal as Hockey Squad Wins Four in a Row

Boys’ Basketball

The Old Saybrook boys’ basketball team won two more games last week and has secured a spot in the Class S State Tournament. With victories against Hale-Ray and Morgan, the Rams extended their win streak to eight straight games and their record stands at 8-1.

On Jan. 11, Old Saybrook hosted Hale-Ray and grabbed a 58-42 victory. Shane Henderson had another standout game with 28 points, six rebounds and five assists for the Rams. Victor Pascoe scored 11 points and seven boards, while Anthony Karg provided eight points and three assists. Mike Almada added five points in the win.

Two days later, the Rams headed to Morgan and won 69-52. Karg led all scorers with 22 points, including four 3-pointers, to go with five assists and three rebounds. Pascoe had 17 points, eight rebounds, and five assists, while Shane Henderson scored 16 points and dished out eight assists.

Girls’ Basketball

The Rams’ girls’ basketball squad split a pair of contests last week to move its record to 6-4 on the season.

On Jan. 12, the Rams were on the road to face Hale-Ray and picked up a 42-23 win. Old Saybrook got out to an early lead and held off the Noises the rest of the way. Senior Chloe Root scored 19 points and had 11 rebounds on the night for the Rams.

Earlier in the week, the Rams were on the road against Coginchaug, where they took a 54-17 defeat on Jan. 9.

Head Coach Steve Woods said that his team is focused on picking up the two wins it needs to qualify for the State Tournament.

“We’re 6-4, and we’re looking toward our first goal to get into the State Tournament,” said Woods. “In every game, we either win or we learn. The only way you lose is if you quit. That won’t happen with these kids.”

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The East Haven-Old Lyme-Old Saybrook-East Hampton (EH-OL-OS-EH) boys’ ice hockey team extended its winning streak to four straight by collecting a pair of victories last week. Old Saybrook High School senior Charlie Carlo netted a goal in one of those games for the Yellowjackets, who improved their overall record to 4-2-1 this season.

With a pair of games on the road, EH-OL-OS-EH started off the week by defeating Hand 5-3 as Head Coach Lou Pane earned career victory No. 425 behind the Yellowjackets’ bench. Zach Paquin scored two goals and added an assist for the Easties, whose other goals were scored by Carlo, Matt Henderson, and Dave Amatruda. Chris Teto had two assists, while Matt Twarowski made 24 saves in the victory.

On Jan. 13, EH-OL-OS-EH visited West Haven emerged with a 2-1 win in overtime as Paquin scored an unassisted goal 1:04 into OT to provide the game-winning tally for the Yellowjackets. Amatruda had scored East Haven’s goal in regulation. Twarowski stood on his head to make 35 saves throughout the contest.
