Madison Trio Ready to Go For Gold at Winter Olympics

Three Madison residents are ready to do both their hometown and their country proud as they get ready to represent the United States at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Peyongchang, South Korea. Mac Bohonnon and Kiley McKinnon are geared up to compete in freestyle skiing, while Zachary Donohue will compete in figure skating at the Winter Olympics, which are behind held from Friday, Feb. 9 through Sunday, Feb. 25.

McKinnon was unable to compete at 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia because of an elbow injury that she suffered weeks before the U.S. team selections began, and so Pyeongchang will be her first appearance at the Games. She will contend for a medal in aerials at this year’s Olympics on the heels of a fourth-place showing at the 2017 World Championships. In 2015, McKinnon took home the World Cup Crystal Globe, a trophy given to the champion of the World Cup circuit. In 2016, McKinnon grabbed silver at the U.S. National Championships and, last year, she claimed two additional silver medals less than a month apart at the U.S. National Championships and the Deer Valley World Cup. On Jan. 6, she earned her first career World Cup win.

Bohonnon returns to Olympic action in the aerials discipline following a fifth-place finish in the men’s competition at the 2014 Winter Games. Since then, he was awarded the Rookie of the Year honor in 2014 for the World Cup circuit. Bohonnon then captured the aerials Crystal Globe one season later. He finished ranked second in the International Ski Federation ranking for the 2016-’17 season.

Donahue and skating partner Madison Hubbell picked up bronze medals at the U.S. Championships in 2012, 2015, 2016, and 2017, and then won their first national crown at the 2018 U.S. Nationals. This will be the duo’s Winter Olympics debut after missing the cut for the 2014 Games by just more than two points at that year’s Nationals.

The 2018 Winter Olympics begin on with the Opening Ceremony at 8 p.m. on Feb. 9. For a complete schedule of the events, visit nbcolympics.com.
