Easties’ Boys’ Hockey Heating Up; Boys Hoops, Wrestling Pick Up Victories

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The East Haven-Old Lyme-Old Saybrook-East Hampton (EH-OL-OS-EH) boys’ ice hockey team extended its winning streak to four straight by collecting a pair of victories last week. With the two wins, the Yellowjackets improved their overall record to 4-2-1 this season.

With a pair of games on the road, EH-OL-OS-EH started off the week by defeating Hand 5-3 as Head Coach Lou Pane earned career victory No. 425 behind the Yellowjackets’ bench. Zach Paquin scored two goals and added an assist for the Easties, whose other goals were scored by Matt Henderson, Dave Amatruda, and Charlie Carlo. Chris Teto had two assists, while Matt Twarowski made 24 saves in the victory.

On Jan. 13, EH-OL-OS-EH visited West Haven emerged with a 2-1 win in overtime as Paquin scored an unassisted goal 1:04 into OT to provide the game-winning tally for the Yellowjackets. Amatruda had scored East Haven’s goal in regulation. Twarowski stood on his head to make 35 saves throughout the contest.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Branford-East Haven-North Branford girls’ ice hockey team played one game last week and took a 3-1 loss at Simsbury in a non-conference contest at the International Skating Center of Connecticut. North Branford senior Morgan Odice scored the lone goal of the game for the Wings, who dropped to 5-3 with the defeat.

Boys’ Basketball

The Yellowjackets won two of their three matchups last week to improve to 5-3 this year with a bulk of their road schedule now behind them.

On Jan. 8, East Haven took the court against Law and needed overtime to pull off a 73-65 victory. The two squads were knotted at 59 prior to the extra frame, where the Easties outscored Law 14-6. Ed Popolizio led the way for East Haven with 29 points, and Ryan Spano added 21 points. As a team, East Haven drained eight three-point attempts.

Two days later, East Haven visited Wilbur Cross and took a 90-50 defeat. Popolizio ended the contest with 19 points, while Nate Furino added 12 points.

The Yellowjackets rebounded with a 66-53 victory over Shelton at home on Jan. 12. The Easties raced out to a 29-16 halftime advantage never looked back. Popolizio scored a game-high 26 points and grabbed eight rebounds for East Haven. Spano scored 14 points, corralled eight boards, and dished out four assists. Furino added 14 points as he drilled four three-pointers in the win.

Wrestling

East Haven took on Cheshire and Northwestern last week and came away with a pair of victories. The Yellowjackets earned a 81-0 shutout over Cheshrie and then defeated Northwestern by a 60-26 margin.

Against Cheshire, East Haven won nine of its matches by way of forfeit. Of the five matches that took place, East Haven prevailed by pin in four of them. Hugo Ortiz won via pin at the 2:55 mark at the 126-pound weight class, Connor Gontarz won by pin in 1:51 at 152, John Consiglio pinned his opponent at 41 seconds at 170, and Kristian Fonacier pinned his opponent at 39 seconds at 195. Telmo Romero won a 12-6 decision at 120 to round out the victories.

The very next day, East Haven defeated Northwestern. The Easties picked up two wins via forfeit and the rest came on pins. Danny Jarrin won his 182-pound bout at the 2:28 mark, Josh Rao pinned his opponent at 1:15 at 195, Justin Fonacier pinned his opponent in 36 seconds at 220, Matt Divito pinned his opponent at 46 seconds at 106, Victor Garcia earned his pin at 2:28 at 113, Alec Tivito won by pin at 4:45 at 126, Tanner Divito earned his victory via pin in 41 seconds at 132, and Gontarz pinned his opponent at 3:17 to win at 145.

Girls’ Indoor Track

Several Yellowjackets competed at the SCC Developmental Meet on Jan. 8 at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven.

Francois Kisha had the best day of any East Haven athlete as she took second in the long jump at 15 feet-11.5 inches and fifth in the 55-meter dash in 7.71 seconds. Molly Mazzucco also put forth a stellar performance by placing third in the high jump at 4 feet-10 inches.

Boys’ Indoor Track

Jay Donaldson was the lone East Haven athlete to score points last week’s SCC Developmental meet. Donaldson ran a time of 6.79 seconds to finish in sixth place in the 55-meter dash at the meet on Jan. 9.
