The Westbrook girls’ basketball team recently picked up its first win of the season by posting a 45-10 victory over Wheeler on Jan. 6. The Knights are now 1-3 on the season.

Junior Savannah Marshall led the way with 19 points for the Knights, while junior Kelly Donlan and sophomore Callie Newberg both scored eight points. Senior Erin Metcalfe and junior Gabby Ehlert added four points apiece, and Olivia Archer scored two points in the victory.

Head Coach Kelly Landino felt proud that her club mustered a strong effort and a recorded a resounding win in its first game back on the floor after the Knights’ season was temporarily suspended due to injuries and low numbers. Westbrook had a game against Oxford scheduled for Dec. 18 that the team ultimately lost by forfeit.

“We had a string of bad luck, starting with low numbers, a variety of injuries, and sickness. We only had five healthy bodies and decided to push our season back a few weeks to allow kids to heal,” said Landino. “Three kids were cleared...and we were finally able to resume our season. It has been a tough start for our team, but I like what I have seen in the face of adversity from these kids. We have become mentally tougher and much closer.”

Boys’ Basketball

Westbrook took three defeats last week and is now 0-5 for the year.

On Dec. 28, Westbrook hosted Old Lyme and lost 57-43. The Knights’ leading scorers were senior Jason Corden, who had nine points; and sophomore Seth Caslin who scored eight. Senior Jack Hayes led the team in rebounding with nine boards, and he also added four assists. Senior Binak Cecunjanin had five rebounds in the contest.

On Jan. 2, the Knights hosted Coginchaug took a 54-37 defeat. The next day, Westbrook headed to Old Saybrook and lost 55-39.

Head Coach Jeff Beeman is still looking for answers with his young team, but said that everyone is willing to continue working to put some victories on the board.

“Despite a poor offensive showing in the fourth quarter, we were able to fight back and cut the deficit to 12 late in the third quarter,” said Beeman. “We will continue to experiment with lineups and altering X’s and O’s till we find the right combination.”
