Morgan Fencing Hosts Inaugural Round Robin Invitational; Basketball Teams Both Lose Two

Boys’ and Girls’ Fencing

The Morgan fencing program hosted its inaugural Varsity Invitational Round Robin event on Jan. 6. The Huskies invited some of the top teams from around the state to compete at the meet, including 2017 state champion Guilford, as well as Hand, Greenwich, and Hopkins.

On the girls’ side, Morgan defeated Hand (20-7) and Hopkins (23-4), while taking losses against Guilford (17-10) and Greenwich (14-13). In épée, junior Jennifer Accetta went 8-2 on the day, and senior Olivia Silver was 7-5, with both athletes going undefeated against Hopkins and Hand. Senior Mary Kate Staunton went 3-0 against Hopkins. In sabre, junior Olivia Morrissey went 9-2 overall and was undefeated against Hand, while fellow junior Angela Recine posted a mark of 5-3. As for foil, senior Grace Hull went 6-4, senior Emma Riccio was 5-3, and junior Rachel Flanagan also went 5-3.

The boys’ results included a win against Hand (22-5) and losses to Hopkins (16-11), Greenwich (18-9), and Guilford (22-5). In épée, senior Cenzo Saturno was 8-4, and junior Scott Accetta finished at 7-5. Both fencers were undefeated against Hand. In sabre, junior Noah Scarpace was 8-4, and fellow junior Sean Arribas-Cockley went 6-4, while going undefeated against Hand.

During the past four seasons, the Huskies have not charged admission fees to the spectators of their bouts, and the same was true for this invitational. They instead asked people to donate non-perishable food items in support of the program’s Fencers Bouting Hunger program. As a result, Morgan fencing has donated more than one ton of food to the Clinton Food Pantry.
