Boys’ Basketball

The Guilford boys’ basketball team remains perfect with a record of 5-0 on the season after posting recent victories versus East Haven and Hand.

The Indians defeated East Haven 73-70 in a double-overtime thriller on Jan. 5. Noah Rubino scored 25 points in the win, but it was Ian Slattery’s three-point basket at the buzzer of the second overtime that won it for the Indians.

Guilford then closed out the week with a 59-42 victory over Hand on Jan. 6.

Girls’ Basketball

The Indians defeated Coginchaug before losing against Amity and Hand to stand at 4-2 overall with a record of 0-1 in the SCC Hammonasset Division this year.

Guilford bested Coginchaug 58-48 on Dec. 28. After a cold first quarter, the Indians fell behind 19-6. Amanda King picked up her second foul just two minutes into the second quarter. After giving King a brief rest, Head Coach Bob Welsh put her back in the game, and the Indians were able to hang around enough to get within 29-17 at halftime. The game proved a tale of two halves as the Indians employed an outstanding team defense to shut down the visiting Blue Devils, outscoring them 41-19 in the second half on their way to the win.

Molly Linell led a balanced scoring attack with 13 points, Hannah McDermott had 11 points, and King and Janie Danaher each chipped in with nine points for Guilford. Jordan Hedge came off the bench to knock down a huge three-pointer that pushed the Guilford lead to seven in the waning minutes. The Indians converted their free throws down the stretch and sealed the victory.

Guilford then took a 48-34 divisional loss to Amity on Jan. 2. After that, the Indians lost 57-30 against Hand on Jan. 6. Sam Leiby led the Indians with 10 points, while Danaher added nine points against Hand.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Indians are now 3-5 after dropping a pair of recent contests.

On Jan. 3, Guilford lost to Branford-East Haven-North Branford by the final score of 6-3. Three days later, the Indians hosted Amity-North Haven-Cheshire and lost 4-0.

Wrestling

Guilford picked up a victory over SCC rival Branford last week. The Indians hosted the Hornets and won by the final score of 49-24 on Jan. 3.

Boys’ and Girls’ Fencing

The Guilford fencing program took part in the Morgan Invitational on Jan. 6 and put forth a dominant performance at the meet.

On the girls’ side, the Indians defeated Greenwich (16-11), Hand (19-8), Hopkins (24-3), and the hosting Huskies (16-11). For the boys, they bested Greenwich (14-13), Hand (24-3), Hopkins (19-18), and Morgan (22-5). Guilford took all team competitions for both girls’ and boys’ foil, épée, and sabre. Out of the 24 matches, Guilford recorded 9-0 shutouts in four of the bouts. The girls’ squad is 6-0 overall, while the boys are 5-1.

“Guilford brought another strong team to the Morgan Invitational. After losing eight state champion graduating seniors, Guilford brings 15 returning state champions and several rising newcomers,” said Head Coach Kyle Mezzi. “We began the tournament with one our toughest competitors, Greenwich, and beat them.”
