The Shoreline Sharks’ ice hockey program held its second annual Hockey Helps the Hungry Food Drive and collected 573 pounds of non-perishable goods that were donated to the Connecticut Food Bank. The organization-wide effort was coordinated by two players from the Sharks’ U-14 Black team: Jenna Guglielmi of Branford and Madison resident Sophia Rodham.

“Two years ago, we realized how many people are hungry in Connecticut and don’t have food for the holidays. We wanted to do something to make a difference and knew the hockey community would help,” said Guglielmi. “Never did we imagine we would collect so much food. We filled two cars and fed a lot of families.”

Throughout November and December, players and coaches from the Sharks and friends of the Sharks, including members of Connecticut Gators U-14 girls’ softball team, dropped off the food items they had collected at DiLungo Rink in East Haven.

“It was truly a team effort, and we are thankful for all the help we got from everyone at the Shoreline Sharks, as well as the East Haven rink, which let us collect and store food on site,” Rodham said. “We took a bite out of hunger and are looking forward to collecting event more food next year!”

The Shoreline Sharks are a non-profit organization that offers developmental and competitive hockey programs for girls aged 3 to 19. The Sharks also offer a 20-week learn-to-play clinic for kids of all ages and skating abilities. For info, shorelinesharkshockey.com or contact info@shorelinesharkshockey.com.
