Guilford residents Karissa Fryar (15) and Juliana Montgomery (11), who study dance at The Dancer’s Studio in Northford, attended the World Tap Dance Championships in Riesa, Germany in the beginning of December. Fryar and Montgomery were part of a group of 44 dancers from New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut that competed at the world meet. The United States committee only picks three dances in each division to represent the U.S. and, after qualifying in their home country, Fryar and Montgomery represented the U.S. on the international stage.

The competition was five days long and featured 12-hour days. Fryar and Montgomery competed in a series of rounds to make the finals, which consisted of the top six. Montgomery competed in four categories and made the finals for all four of her routines. She received two bronze medals in trio and small group categories and had the honor of watching the American flag being raised in honor of she and her teammates. Montgomery also posted a fourth-place finish in her formation category and a sixth-place finish in her duo category.

Fryar competed in five categories. Her small group won the silver medal and watched the American flag get raised. Fryar’s duo had a fifth-place finish, she made the finals with her formation that finishedin sixth, her solo placed ninth overall, and her trio finished 12th.

Fryar and Montgomery had the honor of meeting more than 700 tap dancers from 34 countries throughout an amazing week of extreme pressure and hard work. The duo traded pins, hats, T-shirts with dancers from other countries and marched proudly for the U.S. in the Parade of Nations.
