Guilford Girls’ Hoops Moves to 3-0; Both Hockey Squads Get Wins

Girls’ Basketball

The Guilford girls’ basketball team is off to a fast start with a record of 3-0 this year after earning two more wins.

The Indians defeated North Haven 56-28 on Dec. 18. Amanda King and Julia Hyman combined for 15 steals in the victory. King led a balanced scoring attack with a dozen points, followed by nine from Hannah McDermott, plus eight apiece from Hyman and Jordan Hedge. Elle Petra came off the bench to lead Guilford with 13 rebounds in the winning effort.

Guilford then defeated Foran 53-48 on Dec. 22. Although Guilford built double-digit leads on multiple occasions, Foran would not go away. The Indians led 47-37 with four minutes left, but a 7-0 run by the Lions put them right back in the game. However, King knocked down some timely free throws to preserve a hard-fought victory for Guilford. King paced the Indians with 15 points, including four three-pointers, while McDermott chipped in 14 points.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The Indians are now 2-1 after splitting their two recent contests.

Guilford first took a overtime 4-3 loss to North Branford on Dec. 20. Then on Dec. 27, the Indians defeated Yarmouth, Maine by the score of 3-2.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

Guilford stands at 3-3 after defeating Lauralton Hall and then taking losses against Hamden and Hand-Coginchaug-Old Lyme.

The Indians shut out Lauralton Hall 6-0 on Dec. 20. Guilford then took a 7-0 loss to Hamden on Dec. 23. Four days later, the Indians dropped a 2-1 contest to Hand-Coginchaug-Old Lyme despite out-shooting the Tigers 38-19.

Wrestling

The Indians recently picked up their first win of the year and are now 1-1. Guilford got in the win column by defeating Notre Dame-West Haven 60-15 on Dec. 20.

Girls’ Indoor Track

Guilford took part in the SCC Developmental Meet on Dec. 18 at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven.

Guilford had a stellar showing in the 3,200 as Gianna Siciliano (12:16.96) and Meredith Bloss finished 1-2, while Jacqui Guerra (12:31.17) and Alyssa Lent (12:33.36) came in sixth and seventh place, respectively. Elsewhere, the 4x800 relay of Kelsi Putnam, Bloss, Elissa Strand, and Julia Esposito was the runner-up (10:33.47) to Shelton (10:21.85); Bloss finished fifth in the 600 (1:49.16) and Elissa Strand was seventh (1:50.19), Kelsi Putnam came in 12th for the 1,000 (3:24.78), the 4x200 relay of Jess Bohan, Gabriela Garcia-Perez, Sofia Migani, and Alexandra Greene placed 13th (1:59.36); Migani was tied for 16th in the high jump (4-4), Gabriela Garcia-Perez took 25th in the 55-meter dash (8.08), and Zoe Giwa finished 74th for the shot put (18-0).

Boys’ Indoor Track

The Indians competed at a SCC Developmental Meet at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Dec. 19.

The top finishes for Guilford came from the 4x800 relay of Elijah Dillon, Ben Crair, Brennan Kaisen, and Reese Puchalski (12th, 9:13.30); Ben Crair for the 3,200 (15th, 10:55.05), Joe Walters in the 600 (16th, 1:34.38), Connor Rose in the shot put (16th, 37-11), the 4x200 relay of Liam Roberts, Logan Roberts, Cameron Hubbard, and Ethan Shaw (17th, 1:46.09); Logan Roberts for the long jump (41st, 16-0), Ben VanKueren for the 1,000 (51st, 3:08.94); and McKendry Eschinger in the 55 (83rd, 7.60 seconds).
