2017 Old Saybrook Rams Winter Year in Review

The Old Saybrook indoor track program turned in another stellar showing at this winter’s Shoreline Conference Championships with both teams taking home the gold for the second season in a row. Senior Mac Coppes swam his way to first place at the Class S State Championship, while both Old Saybrook basketball teams notched double-digit victories.

Girls’ Indoor Track

The Rams’ girls’ indoor track team secured a repeat victory at this year’s Shoreline Conference Championship. Devyn King won the 300 with a time of 44.06 and was victorious in the long jump behind a school record leap of 16 feet-11.75 inches for Old Saybrook. King also teamed up with Tyra Finkleday, Holly Coppes, and Vika Stoltz to win the 4x200 relay in 1:52.47.

Old Saybrook later finished third at the Class S State Championship. Finkeldey prevailed in the pole vault with a height of 10-6. The Rams’ 4x800 relay of Allison Bruehwiler, Grace Hanratty, Jael Givehand, and Jessica Stratton ran a time of 10:11.77 to take first place. The 4x200 took third place (1:53.19). At the State Open, Finkeldey placed seventh in the pole vault, the 4x800 relay finished 10th, and King was 15th for the long jump.

Boys’ Indoor Track

Old Saybroo took home its third consecutive Shoreline Conference championship this year. The Rams were bolstered by junior Eric Sultini, who took first place in the 300 at 37.89 seconds and the 600 in 1:25.83. In addition, the team of Sultini, Jalen Johnson, Xavier Rios, and Josh Chang took first place (3:41.86) in the 4x400 relay.

After that, the Rams finished in 14th place at the Class S State Championship, where Sultini took third place in the 600, while James Vukovinsky finished third for the high jump. Sultini went on to place eighth in the 600 at the State Open.

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

Senior Mac Coppes swam to first place in the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle on behalf of Old Saybrook in the Class S State Championship.

Competing as a team-of-one, Coppes recorded a time of 21.99 seconds to win the 50-yard freestyle, after which he won the 100 freestyle by three-hundredths of a second by swimming a time of 49.43. Coppes finished 19th in both events at the State Open.

Boys’ Basketball

The Rams posted an overall record of 15-9 and claimed a victory in the first round of states this year. Old Saybrook defeated Metropolitan Learning Center 75-54 before taking an 83-69 defeat to eventual Class S champion Trinity Catholic in the State Tournament.

Senior guard Connel Henderson earned Coaches All-State Class S First Team accolades, as well as New Haven Register All-State Honorable Mention for his performance on the season.

Girls’ Basketball

Old Saybrook finished with a regular-season record of 12-8 on its way to qualifying for the Shoreline Conference and Class S State tournaments for the first time since 2014.

After losing to eventual conference champion Cromwell in the first round of Shorelines, the Rams headed to states and defeated Parish Hill 64-44 in the first round. Old Saybrook then lost to Thomaston and concluded the campaign at 13-10.

Senior guard Marissa Newell earned New Haven Register All-State Honorable Mention for Head Coach Steve Woods’s squad.
