2017 Old Saybrook Rams Spring Year in Review

Old Saybrook saw another Shoreline Conference title for its girls’ outdoor track team in the spring 2017, while the boys took third place at the same meet. Both of the Rams’ tennis squads enjoyed continued success, and the boys’ lacrosse team had a turnaround that turned some heads this year.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Old Saybrook girls’ outdoor track team won its second straight Shoreline Conference title and took third in the Class S State Championship with Head Coach Peter Capezzone this spring.

At Shorelines, Devyn King took first place in the long jump with a personal-best distance of 17 feet-7 inches and grabbed second place in the 400. She was also part of the second-place 4x100 relay with Holly Coppes, Tyra Finkeldey, and Allison Cody, as well as the 4x400 relay that finished second with Coppes, Finkeldey, and Grace Hanratty. Also claiming victory was the 4x800 relay of Jessica Stratton, Alyssa Diaz, Jael Givehand, and Hanratty (9:55.75). Isabella Donahue took first in the 100 hurdles (16.57), while Annea Thaci finished second. The Rams also went 1-2 in the high jump as sophomore Julia Ludwiszewski and Rachel Vigorita both cleared 5 feet. Finkeldey earned gold in the pole vault by clearing 11 feet.

In states, the 4x800 relay took first with the time of 9:47.81. Additionally, Finkeldey took first in the pole vault as she cleared 10 feet-6 inches.

Boys Outdoor Track

The Rams took third place at the Shoreline Conference Championship behind several stellar finishes. Old Saybrook saw the 4x800 relay of Josh Change, Shane Henderson, Xavier Rios, and Eric Sultini take first place with a time of 8:13.17. Sultini claimed first in the 400 at 52.40 and, in the 800, Henderson won first with a time of 2:00.58. Senior Austin Reynolds grabbed gold in the triple jump with a distance of 41 feet-3.5 inches. Several athletes also competed at the Class S State Championship, where the Rams finished in eighth.

Boys’ Tennis

The Rams posted a 18-2 regular-season record and took fifth place at the Class S State Championship.

Saba Cecunjanin advanced to the 1-2 singles final at the Shoreline Conference Tournament and then reached the singles final at the Class S state meet. Old Saybrook sent three doubles tandems to states, including Mac Coppes and Ben VanVliet, who advanced to the third round. Coppes, VanVliet, Bailey Noack, and Cecunjanin were all named All-Shoreline Conference First Team. The Rams’ head coach was Gerald Carlone.

Girls’ Tennis

Old Saybrook finished with a 19-4 record and qualified for the Class S State Tournament this year. After posting the second-best record in the Shoreline Conference in the regular season, Head Coach Ruthanne Rothman’s squad saw Erin Stangel secure her second straight 3-4 singles title at Shorelines by earning a win against teammate Isabella Luciani. Rosie Rothman made the 1-2 singles semifinal, and Rothman, Luciani, and Stangel each earned All-Shoreline Conference First Team honors.

Boys’ Lacrosse

Old Saybrook finished with a 8-10 record to qualify for the Class S State Tournament in Head Coach James Hespeler’s first campaign after the team had gone 0-16 in each of the previous two seasons. The Rams won six of their last eight regular-season games to make states and then defeated Holy Cross 15-4 in the qualifying round before losing to Somers.

Junior captain Keaton Roarick broke the state record in career saves with 318 and was named to the All-Shoreline Conference First Team and All-State Second Team. Senior captain Christos Ellinas scored 56 goals and had 31 assists, senior captain midfielder Jack Oliveri had 20 goals with 16 assists and was named the Rams’ Most Valuable Player, and senior defenseman Sloan True earned All-Shoreline Conference Second Team honors.

Girls’ Lacrosse

Old Saybrook went 9-7 during the regular season to make it to the Shoreline Conference Tournament and the Class S State Tournament this spring. Kendra Gerrish was in her second season as head coach of the Rams.

Baseball

The Rams finished the 2017 season with a 10-12 record and made it into the Class S State Tournament. The Rams secured their spot in states with an 8-2 victory against Westbrook on May 12. Head Coach Dan Driscoll’s the team also played in the Shoreline Conference Tournament.

Softball

Old Saybrook had an overall mark of 8-14 this year. In her first year as head coach, Katelyn Flanagan’s squad went on a late-season surge to for both the Shoreline Conference and Class S State tournaments, solidifying their bid by earning a 13-1 victory over Plainfield in their regular-season finale.

Golf

The Rams finished with a 9-7 record and seventh-place finish in the Shoreline Conference Tournament in Curtis Gullette’s first season as head coach. The Rams also took 13th place at the Division IV State Championship.
