2017 Old Saybrook Rams Fall Year in Review

The 2017 fall season saw some exciting times in Old Saybrook. The Rams’ boys’ soccer team went undefeated for the regular season, while the football squad had another winning year with a record of 8-2. Old Saybrook’s cross country teams continued blazing trails, and the field hockey squad found its way into the postseason and then got a win.

Boys’ Soccer

The Old Saybrook boys’ soccer team posted its second straight undefeated regular season with a record of 16-0 on its way to appearances in the Shoreline Conference and Class S State Tournament semifinals this year. Old Saybrook took a 2-0 loss to Morgan in the Shoreline semifinals. The Rams’ postseason victories came in stats when they defeated North Branford 4-0 in the second round and then earned a 1-0 victory over Litchfield in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Head Coach Sam Barnes’s squad faced off against Shoreline rival Morgan and lost a 2-1 decision that came down to penalty kicks.

The Rams’ success the season was the result of several hard-working players, including senior captain midfielder Justin Phillips, Paddy Ryan, Anthony Karg, Austin Hilger, Haydon Lockhart, Sebastian Galitto, and goalkeeper Jonah Nucci.

Girls’ Soccer

One year after reaching the Class S state final, the Rams finished with a 5-9-2 record on the season. Berkeley Cecchini-Bond completed her second campaign as Old Saybrook’s head coach.

Football

The Old Saybrook-Westbrook football team posted an overall record of 8-2 record with a mark of 6-2 in the Pequot League Sassacus Division. The Rams earned divisional wins against Nonnewaug, Lewis Mills, Valley Regional-Old Lyme, Coginchaug/Hale-Ray, North Branford, and Morgan.

Vincent Dyer made the All-Pequot League Sassacus Division Team at running back and was also the Sassacus Division Most Valuable Player. He was helped by his offensive line, which featured fellow All-Pequot Sassacus Team linemen Jameson Long and David McCain. The Rams also had All-Division Team recipients on defense with Victor Pascoe at defensive back, Landis Twomey on the defensive line, and Andrew Naccarato as a utility player.

Girls’ Cross Country

The Rams finished in second place at both the Shoreline Conference Championship, as well as the Class SS State Championship. Head Coach Peter Capezzone’s squad also sent its entire lineup to compete as part of the State Open Championship, where Rams finished in 14th.

At Shorelines, Grace Hanratty took third place with a time of 21:12. At states, Hanratty finished in eighth place at 20:45 to earn All-State honors. Other runners competing at these meets included Castro, Givehand, Sultini, Boland, Szucs, and Cart.

Boys’ Cross Country

Old Saybrook posted a second-place finish at Shoreline Conference Championship and then took third place at the Class SS State Championship with Head Coach Peter Capezzone.

At Shorelines, Shane Henderson took fourth place with a time of 17:46 for the Rams, whose other runners were Lance Sigersmith, Eric Sultini, Jacob Schneider, Ian Mason, and Noah D’Ambrosie. Then at states, Henderson placed sixth with a time of 17:00 to make All-State. Sigersmith, Schneider, Mason, Sultini, D’Ambrosie, and Jack Wiley also competed at the state meet, and Henderson later ran at the State Open.

Field Hockey

Old Saybrook qualified for the Shoreline Conference and Class S State Tournaments with an overall record of 6-10-2-1 with Head Coach Amanda Tuthill.

In Shorelines, the Rams lost to North Branford in the semifinals. In the state tourney, the Rams posted a 3-2 win over Northwest Catholic in the qualifying round before losing to North Branford.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

Junior Morgan Leopoldino placed third in the 500 freestyle at the Class S State Championship and earned All-State honors for the second year in a row. She posted a time of 5:27.46 in the 500 freestyle and also recorded a time of 2:05.54 for ninth place in the 200 freestyle. Also competing for the Rams was Helen Day, who took ninth in the 200 individual medley with a 2:21.01 and 10th in the 100 butterfly with 1:05.68.
