2017 Morgan Huskies Winter Year in Review

Morgan’s indoor track teams had great postseason performances this winter, while the Huskies’ wrestling squad also made its mark at marquee meets. Elsewhere, the Morgan girls’ basketball squad welcomed a new head coach into the fold.

Girls’ Indoor Track

The Morgan girls’ indoor track team tied for second place in the Shoreline Conference Championship, after which Head Coach Mike Underwood’s squad finished sixth at the Class S State Championship during the 2017 winter season.

At the Shoreline meet, Alyssa Robinson won the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 9.45 seconds. Kate Daley earned second in the 3,200, and the 4x200 relay of Alyssa LeMay, MiKayla Mancini, Taylor Wyatt, and Courtney Viglione also placed second. The 4x800 of Daley, Madison Emmi, Allison Gardner, and Isabella Ranaudo took second place, as did the 1,600 sprint medley relay of LeMay, Julia Zirkelbach, Gardner, and Viglione.

At states, Morgan saw the 4x800 relay team take second place, while Daley finished third in the 1,600.

Boys’ Indoor Track

The Huskies posted a fourth-place finish at the Shoreline Conference Championship this year. Juan Avila won the long jump with a leap of 20 feet-2 inches. Bryce Thomas took second place in the 55-meter hurdles for the Huskies. The 4x800 relay team of Nate Hornyak, Anes Gadun, Burton Caldwell, and Thomas Southwood earned second place and later finished fourth at states.

Wrestling

Head Coach Eric Leiss and the Morgan wrestling team finished ninth in the Class S State Championship. Austin Daley claimed second place in the 285-pound weight class by earning two wins via pin to advance to the final. In the championship bout, Daley lost a 2-1 decision. Ivan Villanueva took fifth place in the 182-pound weight class. Trevor Follo (113), Andrew Fortuna (138), and Anthony Cimino (145) all earned sixth place. Daley, Villanueva, Follo, and Cimino went on to wrestle at the State Open.

Girls’ Basketball

Former assistant coach Caitlin Woods took the reins as the Huskies’ head coach in 2017. Morgan finished with a record of 4-16 on the season, posting victories versus Portland, Creed, Hale-Ray, and North Branford.

Morgan’s captains on the year were senior Shannon Maher, along with juniors Madison Seeger and Brianna Navarra.

Boys’ Basketball

Morgan finished with a record of 4-16, picking up wins against Valley Regional, Hale-Ray, Grasso Tech, and Bullard-Havens.

Head Coach Ken Beeman’s Huskies were guided senior captain Jake Anselmo, who led Morgan in points (16.5), assists (3.2), rebounds (4.4), and steals (1.4) per game.

Cheerleading

Morgan competed at the Class S State Championship this winter. The Huskies finished in 10th place at the meet.

Boys’ and Girls’ Fencing

Head Coach James Barnett and the Huskies completed their third campaign as a varsity program in 2017. Foilists Julia Horan and Olivia Digianmenico were the senior captains for the girls’ team. Junior foilist Wyatt Reu was among the top fencers on the boys’ squad.
