2017 Haddam-Killingworth Cougars Winter Year in Review

The 2016-’17 winter season saw some nice success stories at Haddam-Killingworth. One of the biggest ones was Lyman Hall/H-K/Coginchaug ice hockey squad, which made its conference tournament final and the state semifinals. The Cougars’ wrestling team took fourth place in its state meet, while gymnast Erin Figurelli had an excellent campaign.

Ice Hockey

The Lyman Hall/Haddam-Killingworth/Coginchaug ice hockey squad went on two deep postseason runs this year that took the team to the final of the SCC/SWC Division III Tournament, as well as the semifinals of the Division III State Tournament. The Trojans lost to Newtown in the conference final and later took a loss to Woodstock Academy in the semi semis to finish with an overall record of 13-12.

For All-SCC/SWC Division III Team honors, Hunter Boileau was named to the First Team, plus Chris Blanchard and Scott Bradley made the Second Team for Head Coach Rich Minnix’s club. Blanchard and Boileau were All-State Division III First Team and Bradley was a Second Team selection. Blanchard made the New Haven Register’s All-Area Team, while he and Boileau were part of Register

’s the All-State Third Team.

Boys’ Basketball

The Cougars finished the season with a record of 12-10 after taking a 50-36 loss to North Branford in the first round of the Class S State Tournament. Head Coach Pete Asadourian’s team also qualified for the Shoreline Conference Tournament this winter.

Girls’ Basketball

H-K finished with a record of 4-16 this year. Head Coach Scott Medeiros’s team picked up two victories versus Morgan, plus one win against Creed and another versus Hale-Ray.

Wrestling

Head Coach Nick Adler and the Cougars finished fourth at the Class S State Championship. H-K crowned two state champions in Jake Firth, who prevailed in the 138-pound weight class by defeating Tavon Simpson of Notre Dame-Fairfield 9-1 in the final; along with Grayson Adler, who took the 160 crown by besting Ledyard’s Jacob Millbach with a pin at 1:30 into their championship bout. Also placing in the top six of their respective classes were Matthew Jenkins (2nd, 132), David Wyzykowski (2nd, 182), and Aidan Korper (3rd, 145).

At the State Open, WyzyKowski finished fifth in the 182-pound weight class. Also competing were Jenkins, who won two bouts in the 132 class; along with Korper and Adler, who picked up one victory apiece in the 145 and 160 weight classes, respectively. Wyzykowski wrestled at the New England Championship. He competed in the 182-pound weight class and posted a record of 2-2.

Gymnastics

Erin Figurelli represented the H-K/Hale-Ray/Morgan gymnastics squad at the State Open Championship. Figurelli scored an 8.975 on the vault, had a score of 9.05 on bars, posted a mark of 8.35 for the beam, and scored a 9.05 on floor, finishing with an all-around total of 35.425. Figurelli was named to the New Haven Register

’s All-Area Team. Additionally at the Open, Morgan’s Haley Smith competed on the vault and recorded a score of 8.3 for Head Coach Carl Cavrell’s squad.

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

The Cougars, coached by Ross Hanson, finished in 11th place at the SCC Championship. Zach Houlton finished in fifth place for the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:51.49 at the meet.

H-K then came in ninth place at the Class S State Championship.

Boys’ Indoor Track

Head Coach Dick Dupuis and the H-K boys’ indoor track team finished in second place at the Shoreline Conference Championship. The 4x200 relay of Nick Formica, Shahzaih Khalid, Kyle Crandall, and Nate Parker finished second (1:38.78), while the 4x800 of Mike Callis, Kurt Sodergren, Carter Murray, and Jonah Spector was third (9:00.64). The 4x400 relay of Criscuolo, Freeman, Crandall, and Khalid also raced to third place (3:48.66). Spector paced to third with the 1,600 (4:48.68), and the long jump saw a 2-3 finish behind Formica (19-9) and Parker (19-7.5). Nate Breiling came in third for the shot put (38 feet-3 inches), while Jonathan Ellery finished as the runner-up in the pole vault (11-0).

The Cougars finished 22nd at the Class S State Championship. At the State Open Formica reached a distance of 19 feet-8 inches in the long jump and finished in 15th place. Formica, Ellery, and the Cougars’ 4x200 relay team made the All-Shoreline Second Team.

Girls’ Indoor Track

The Cougars came in fourth place at the Shoreline Conference Championship this year. Veronica Chrzanowski placed second in the long jump (16-7), Julie Kelly was runner-up for the 600 (1:44.91), the 4x400 relay group of Ashley Duncanson, Andi Roman, Maddie Kiely, and Kelly took second place (4:23.89), while the 4x800 of Emma Anziano, Lizzie Early, Hailey Cassidy, and Kelsey D’Amico claimed third (10:33.10). D’Amico additionally finished third in the 3,200 at 12:22.91 for Head Coach Dick Dupuis’s team.

H-K finished in 12th place at the Class S State Championship, where D’Amico was the runner-up (5:19.90) in the 1,600. At the State Open, D’Amico finished 11th in the 1,600, and Chrzanowski came in ninth for the long jump (16 feet-2.75 inches). Chrzanowski and the H-K 4x400 relay squad made the All-Shoreline Second Team.
