2017 Guilford Summer Year in Review

It was a sizzling summer for both teams in the Post 48 American Legion baseball program. Each of Guilford’s squads qualified for postseason play during the summer of 2017.

Senior American Legion Baseball

Head Coach Michael Yates and the Post 48 Seniors finished 18-10 for the regular season and came in fourth place for the Zone 3 standings. Guilford took a 3-2 loss to East Haven in the opening round of the State Tournament to finish 18-11 overall.

Guilford’s wins came against Prospect-Beacon Falls (5-0, 17-1, 12-0, 1-0), Cheshire (8-7, 1-0), East Haddam (9-6, 6-0, 2-1, 7-1), Wallingford (7-1, 2-0, 3-1, 3-0), Madison (9-2 and 9-0), Middletown (4-1), and Meriden (7-6).

Junior American Legion Baseball

Jon Reinecke’s squad qualified for the State Tournament and competed in the double-elimination Northern Division Sectional portion of the bracket. Post 48 recorded a pair of victories in the tourney before seeing its season come to a close with a defeat against West Hartford.

Guilford placed second in the Zone 5-3 standings with a 12-6 mark in zone play and finished 14-7 overall for the regular season. Post 48 was the No. 4 seed in states and began play with a 3-0 shutout of No. 13 seed Manchester on July 17. Facing No. 5 West Hartford on July 19, Guilford lost by a 13-4 score. Guilford then took on No. 12 seed Wolcott the next day and squeaked out a 4-3 victory to advance to the sectional finals against West Hartford on July 22. Guilford lost to West Hartford 3-1 to finish its season with a record of 16-9.

Guilford’s wins came against Waterbury (19-0, 10-0), Branford (6-3), Oxford (11-6, 7-6), Bethel (4-2), Hamden (1-0), Naugatuck (4-2, 3-2), Oakville (5-4, 4-3), Danbury (2-1), Middletown (9-6), and Meriden (4-3).
