Morgan had a fall campaign for the ages as its boys’ soccer squad captured conference and state titles in 2017. The Huskies’ girls’ soccer squad also put together a quality season, while Kate Daley crossed the finish line on a nice high school cross country career.

Boys’ Soccer

The Morgan boys’ soccer team made its mark in 2017 by posting the most successful season in Huskies’ soccer history. Head Coach Ross Demay’s squad played to an overall record of 18-3-2, earned a share of the Shoreline Conference title with Haddam-Killingworth, and won the Class S state championship for the first time since 1964 with a 4-0 win against Somers in the final.

The Huskies received two goals from Juan Avila, a goal by fellow senior captain Tyler Newfield, and another goal from sophomore Zachary Tuccitto in the Class S title game. Senior captain goalkeeper Anes Gadun made three saves to earn the shutout. Morgan had made the final by earning a first-round bye and then defeating Thomaston 4-1 in the second round, Cromwell 2-1 in the quarterfinals, and Old Saybrook in the semis by a 2-1 score after winning 3-2 in penalty kicks. Junior Jack O’Sullivan netted the deciding PK for the Huskies.

Previously, in the Shoreline Conference Tournament, Morgan beat Cromwell 6-1 in the quarterfinals, Old Saybrook 2-0 in the semis, and then played to a 1-1 tie with Haddam-Killingworth in the final to share the title with the Cougars.

The Huskies’ roster featured senior captains Juan Avila, Anes Gadun, and Tyler Newfield; seniors Trevor Follo, Aedan Mahoney, Patrick Markovics, James Saturno, and Jhan Carlos Bermeo; juniors Sean Fitzgerald, Calvin Jackson, Matt Koziy, Jacob McHenry-Kron, Nicolas Muratori, Jack O’Sullivan, Jhonnyer Paida, Andrew Passante, Ford Pender, and Carter Skidmore; and sophomores Andrew Daly, Kyle Gagliardi, Matt Gardner, Alex Kadlof, Josh Kennedy, Nate Rice, Nick Rubino, Ethan Tessman, and Zachary Tuccitto; and freshmen Sean Cafferty, Gershom Jara, Ryan Nguyen, and Maxwell Skidmore.

Girls’ Soccer

The Huskies saw a successful season under first-year Head Coach Steve Sullivan by posting a record of 15-4-2. The Huskies made the Shoreline Conference Tournament semifinals and the Class M State Tournament quarterfinals.

In Shorelines, the Morgan grabbed a 4-0 win against Portland and then lost to North Branford in the semis. In states, the Huskies made some noise with a 2-0 first-round win against New Fairfied, and then avenged their loss to North Branford by winning 2-1 (3-1 on PKs) in the second round.

Senior Courtney Viglione earned All-Shoreline Conference First Team and All-State honors behind 17 goals and seven assists. Erin Lindsay was named to the All-Shoreline Conference Second Team and was the Huskies’ Most Valuable Player. Morgan’s goalkeeper was Rebecca Cockley, who had six shutouts.

Girls’ Cross Country

Kate Daley turned in another solid season on the trails for Morgan with a third-place finish at the Shoreline Conference Championship, a second-place finish en route to All-State honors at the Class SS State Championship, and an appearance at the State Open.

The other runners for Head Coach Mike Underwood’s squad included Phoebe Sullivan, Leah Comiskey, Isabella Dowd, and Taylor DiFillippo.

Boys’ Cross Country

The Huskies finished ninth at the Shoreline Conference Championship, where Chayse Lofgren recorded a 20th-place performance. Morgan’s other runners included Thomas Southwood, Caleb Adams-Hull, Justin Mucha, Aiden Maurais, Brett Martin, and Zachary Leach. At states, Head Coach Mike Underwood’s team finished in 21st place.

Volleyball

Morgan finished its season with a 7-13 record and made the quarterfinals of the Shoreline Conference Tournament in Head Coach Paige Trusty’s second year at the helm.

The Huskies received strong performances from senior captains Georgia Nye (192 kills) and Taylor Marnett (311 digs), as well as junior captain Mackenzie Anderson (137 kills) during the season.

Field Hockey

Morgan finished the season with a mark of 4-9-3. The year was a step right direction for Head Coach Melissa Fritze’s team after the Huskies went without a win in 2016.

Football

The Huskies were in their third season with Peter Nye as their head coach this fall. Morgan finished with a record of 0-10 for the year.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

Morgan sent its 200 medley relay team of Sydney Fratamico, Sage Follo, MaryKate Staunton, and Emma Riccio to the Class S State Championship. The quartet posted a time of 2:06.19 to finish in 20th place at the meet.
