Boys’ Basketball

One year after winning the Shoreline Conference Tournament and advancing to the final of the Class S State Tournament, the Westbrook boys’ basketball team played its first game of the 2017-’18 winter season when the Knights traveled to Cromwell last week. Westbrook took a 59-39 defeat against the Panthers on Dec. 16.

The Knights played a competitive first half, and Cromwell went into halftime with just a one-point lead at 32-31. However, the Panthers were able to dial it up on defense in the second half and came away with the 59-39 victory.

Senior Vincent Dyer led the Knights in scoring with 13 points, and he was followed by sophomore Seth Caslin with 11 points. Dyer and fellow senior Jack Hayes also led Westbrook in rebounds by grabbing eight apiece.

Westbrook has a somewhat of an inexperienced squad this season, but Head Coach Jeff Beeman is optimistic that his players will put it together in due time.

“Tough first game on the road, but we are moving in the right direction, and progressing nicely as we try to establish this team’s identity and best way to win,” said Beeman.

Girls’ Basketball

The Knights’ girls’ basketball squad played its first two games of the season last week and lost matchups against Old Saybrook and Cromwell.

On Dec. 12, Westbrook was on the road against Old Saybrook and dropped a 40-31 decision. Then on Dec. 16, the Knights went up against a tough Cromwell squad and lost 66-15.
