Schlottman Nets 40 as Yellowjackets’ Girls’ Hoops Starts 2-0; Boys’ Hockey Forms Co-Op Squad

Girls’ Basketball

The East Haven girls’ basketball team is off to a great start this year after posting double-digit victories in its first two games of the campaign. The Yellowjackets defeated Foran and Sheehan last week to begin the season at 2-0.

On Dec. 12, the Easties went on the road and defeated Foran 75-44 behind a 40-point effort by senior captain Kylie Schlottman. Schlottman also added 10 rebounds in the victory, while junior McKenzie Helms scored 13 points for East Haven.

Then on Dec. 16, the Yellowjackets earned another road win by prevailing 51-40 at Sheehan. Schlottman scored 14 points for East Haven, which received 13 points apiece from Helms and sophomore Alexis Pendziwater.

Boys’ Basketball

The Yellowjackets traveled to Foran to open their season on Dec. 16 and lost a 50-40 decision. Ed Popolizio scored a game-high 22 points, and Nate Furino added nine points for the Easties in the defeat.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

East Haven is joining forces with hockey players from Old Lyme, Old Saybrook, and East Hampton to form a co-op team this winter. In its first game of the year, the Yellowjackets took a 6-0 loss against Farmington Valley on Dec. 16.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Branford-East Haven-North Branford girls’ ice hockey team began the year by hosting Stamford-Westhill-Staples-Trinity Catholic at DiLungo Rink on Dec. 16. The Wings claimed a 4-1 victory in their season opener.

Jack Norton is back for another season as head coach of the Wings. Last year, the team competed in Division I of the SCC. This season, the SCC has been divided into North and South divisions, and the Wings are in the South Division with Hamden, West Haven-Sacred Heart Academy, Amity-North Haven-Cheshire, Hand-Coginchaug-Old Lyme, Guilford, Notre Dame-Fairfield/Law/Weston, Masuk-Barlow-Newtown-Oxford, and Lauralton Hall.

Wrestling

East Haven lost its opening matchup of the season at home to Hand by a 58-17 score last week.

East Haven saw three athletes claim victory against the Tigers as Josh Rao, Justin Fonacier, and Tanner Divito each emerged victorious. Rao won in the 195-pound weight class via pin at the 2:31 mark, Fonacier won at 220 via pin at 4:24, and Divito was victorious at 106 with a 17-2 score.

Other Easties who competed at the meet included Antonio Lieto (120), Alec Divito (126), Amadeo Bugatti (132), Jonathan Macao (138), Connor Gontarz (145), Joncarlo Alberino (152), Danny Jarrin (170), Kristian Fonacier (182), and Armando Castaneda (285).
