Guilford Girls’ Hoops, Boys’ Hockey Claim Victory in Season Openers

Girls’ Basketball

The Guilford girls’ basketball squad opened its season by netting a victory versus Lyman Hall last week. The Indians earned a 45-31 win over the Trojans on Dec. 14 to start the year.

Guilford got out of the gate in a hurry by going on a 10-0 run to start the game. Lyman Hall made a run and stayed close until the Indians went on a big run early in the fourth quarter to extend the lead to 14.

The Indians were sparked by senior captain Julia Hyman, who led the way with 12 points and seven steals. Molly Linell chipped in with seven points and snared 10 rebounds. Amanda King and Janie Danaher added to a balanced scoring attack by recording seven points apiece. Guilford turned in a solid defensive effort, led by Amanda King in the middle of the zone, holding Lyman Hall to one field goal in the second quarter and only two baskets in the final frame.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The defending SWC/SCC Division II and Division II state champion Guilford boys’ ice hockey team faced off against Trinity Catholic in its season opener on Dec. 16. Guilford won its opening contest by a 10-5 final to kick off the season on a triumphant note.

Jack Ring and John Delucia both had hat tricks for the Indians, while Jack Dacey and Jake Watrous each scored a pair of goals. Delucia had four assists, Ring contributed three assists, plus Watrous, Zach Woxland, Joe Neleber, and Dacey all added an assist in the win. Guilford outshot Trinity Catholic 36-29 with Mete Yanbul (17 saves) and Alex Attruia (7 stops) sharing the goalkeeping duties for the Indians.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Indians split a pair of recent matchups and are now 2-1 this year.

Guilford faced off with West Haven-Sacred Heart Academy on Dec. 13 and lost by a 5-0 final. The Indians then defeated Masuk-Barlow-Newtown-Oxford-Bethel by the score of 7-0 on Dec. 16.

Boys’ and Girls’ Fencing

The Indians started off their winter campaign with a home bout against Morgan last week. The Guilford boys’ squad prevailed 23-4 over the Huskies, while the girls’ team won by the final of 14-13.

Wrestling

The Indians opened their 2017-’18 campaign by competing against Foran last week. Guilford took a 55-21 loss against the Lions on Dec. 13.
