The Haddam-Killingworth football team hosted divison rival Valley Regional-Old Lyme on Nov. 17 in the teams’ annual battle for the Principal’s Cup. The Warriors grabbed a 22-7 victory as the Cougars concluded their regular season with an overall record of 6-4 to go with a mark of 5-3 in the Pequot League’s Sassacus Division. H-K won four of its final five games this year to earn its first winning season since 2011.

H-K was held to 110 total rushing yards in its loss to Valley-Old Lyme. The Warriors stopped H-K on 4th-and-1 at the 1-yard line late in third quarter to preserve a one-touchdown lead, and then put the game away on a short TD run from quarterback Mike Cullina with just less than four minutes left in the game. Valley-Old Lyme (9-1, 7-1) clinched a spot in the Class S State Playoffs and won the Sassacus Division title with this victory.

“Defensive ends Aiden Maher and Ricky Carson had strong games from their defensive end positions, recording five tackles, including several for a loss,” said H-K Head Coach Mike Baklik. “The kids played hard. We didn’t finish drives or take advantage of our opportunities. You have to capitalize on your breaks.”
