Freshman Maddie Bergin broke her own school record in the 50-yard freestyle when she posted a time of 24.26 seconds in the event to finish in seventh place at the State Open Championship at Yale University on Nov. 18. Sophomore Angela Gambardella finished in the top five of two events for the Indians, who scored 141 points to record an 11th-place performance as a squad.

Bergin’s time of 24.26 in the 50 freestyle bettered her school-record time of 24.32 from when she placed third in the event at the SCC Championship. She then won the 50 free with a time of 24.44 at the Class M State Championship, where North Haven finished second as a team. Additionally at the Open, Bergin placed 11th for the 100 freestyle at 53.21. Bergin had set the school record in that event with a 53.27 when she won it at the SCC meet and then broke it again by recording a time of 53.03 in her victory at states.

For Gambardella at the Open, the sophomore took fourth place in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.12) and finished fifth in the 200 individual medley (2:06.71). Previously, Gambardella set the school record in the breaststroke at 1:04.33 with her win at SCCs and then topped it with a 1:03.82 to take first in the Class M meet. In the 200 IM, Gambardella won it at the SCC Championship with a school-record time of 2:06.70 and also took first at states with a 2:06.59, which is now the school record.

Also at the Open, North Haven’s 200 medley relay of Bergin, Gambardella, and senior captains Jasmine Nguy and Laura Borrelli finished in 12th place with a time of 1:52.64. That grouping had taken second place at SCCs with a school record mark of 1:51.90 and then broke their record with a time of 1:51.43 in their victory at the Class M State Championship.

The Indians’ 200 freestyle relay of Gambardella, Borrelli, freshman Riley Jooss, and Bergin placed 15th at the Open Championship by posting a time of 1:41.32. That quartet had previously broke the school record with a 1:40.88 while taking third at the SCC meet, after which they finished first in states with a time of 1:40.89.

When all was said and done for the postseason, Gambardella made All-SCC and All-State in both the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke for the second straight season. Bergin was All-SCC and All-State for the 50 and 100 freestyles. The Indians’ 200 medley relay went All-SCC and All-State, while the 200 freestyle relay also earned All-State accolades by virtue of its performance at the Class M meet.
