Hand Girls’ Soccer Eliminated by St. Joseph in Class L Semis; Mendonca Takes 2nd in Backstroke at States

Girls’ Soccer

For the second straight year, the Hand girls’ soccer team took on St. Joseph in the Class L State Tournament semifinals last week. The 2nd-seeded Tigers dropped a 3-0 contest to the No. 3 seed Cadets on Nov. 15 at West Haven, marking Hand’s first defeat since its opening game of the season. Hand notched a record of 20-2-1 for the year, won the SCC Quinnipiac Division title, and also claimed its first SCC crown since 2009.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

The Tigers’ girls’ swimming and diving squad came in seventh place with 271 points at the Class L State Championship at Wesleyan University on Nov. 15.

Kayla Mendonca swam a time of 58.19 seconds in the 100 backstroke and was the runner-up to Cheshire’s Alexandra Tyler (56.98) at the state meet. Mendonca also placed ninth in the 200 individual medley at 2:11.76. Allie Mascia was claimed fourth place for the 50 freestyle (24.63) and sixth in the 100 freestyle (54.16) for Hand.

The Tigers’ 400 free relay of Ruby Redlich, Ava Keane, Allie Mascia, and Mendonca finished fifth (3:39.95); the 200 freestyle relay of Kylie Scarpellino, Erin Reilly, Keane, and Redlich was seventh (1:44.68); and the 200 medley relay of Mendonca, Gabby Wira, Case Porter, and Mascia came in eighth place (1:53.80).

Additionally, Redlich finished 13th for both the 200 free (1:58.75) and 100 free (55.27), Porter was 13th in the 100 butterfly (1:00.07), and Keane finished 24th for the 100 freestyle in a time of 56.91.
