11/09/2017 11:00 PMResidents of Bishop Lane in Madison, in conjunction with the support of local businesses, recently held their second annual Neighborhood Gathering and Golf Tournament and raised $3,000 for local charities—doubling last year’s charitable contribution. This year’s Bishop Lane Whiskey & Social League event selected Madison ABC and the Scranton Library as its designated charities.
Thomas Virgulto, the president of the Madison ABC board, was pleased to have the opportunity to attend the banquet and also address the audience with heartfelt appreciation during the awards ceremony.
“Your generous donation will help support Madison ABC’s goal to provide educationally disadvantaged minority scholars with the opportunity for an outstanding education within our Madison community,” he said. “Our goal is to prepare them for success at a rigorous four-year college, so that they can eventually assume positions of leadership and responsibility in their communities. The program’s success depends on the backing and support of the Madison community, and our board of directors, resident staff, host families, and scholars would like to say thank you for opening your hearts and your wallets to ABC.”
Beth Crowley, the library director at the Scranton Memorial Library, expressed her gratitude for the generosity of the event.
“What an amazing gift to be chosen as one of the recipients of the Bishop Lane Neighborhood Golf Tournament,” she said. “The donation will go a long way in helping us provide library materials and services to all of Madison’s residents. Thank you to all involved with this creative and fun idea.”
The tournament attracted more 80 golfers and 14 local business sponsors. Organized by the informal Bishop Lane Whiskey & Social League, play was held throughout various yards with practice foam golf balls. The event was open to friends and families of all ages and golf skills. The goal was to have fun, gather with neighbors, and give back to the community. A $35 per person entry fee was augmented by many additional donations from other people in the Madison community who appreciated that the event supported local causes.
Garden tractors and all-terrain vehicles were welcomed in lieu of golf carts. Each hole was hosted by a Bishop Lane family with the support of a local business sponsor, with signature beverages provided at each tee box. An outdoor banquet with live music from local guitarist Fred Houde followed the tournament, and prizes awarded for the closest to the pin, high and low gross score, and the best dressed man and woman.

Excavating, Klein’s Golf Range, Ferraro’s Meat King, Therapeutic Massage & Wellness, Madison Ave Hair Salon, Clarity Software, Anderson Bros., Bradley & Wall, Madison Wine & Spirits, and Kennedy & Perkins; as well as a special thanks to the Corniello family, which gave back its $350 worth of winnings from the 50/50 raffle back to the charities.
