Rosado Swims to Two Top-Five Finishes at SCCs for the Yellowjackets

Swimming

The East Haven-Wilbur Cross (EH-WC) co-op girls’ swim team competed in the Southern Connecticut Conference Championship at Southern Connecticut State University on Nov. 1 and finished in 11th place out of 17 teams with a total of 347 points scored. Cheshire scored a meet-record total of 1,630.5 points to win its sixth straight league title and its 23rd in the last 24 years.

The Yellowjackets’ best individual performance at the SCC meet came from Laura Rosado. The senior finished second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.93 seconds and was also fifth in the 100 butterfly by clocking in with a mark of 59.27 seconds. Sophomore Daniela Bedoya also had a solid individual showing as she placed ninth in the 100 butterfly at 1:01.17 and was 12th in the 100 freestyle behind a time of 55.88.

Additionally for EH-WC, Jung Joo Kim took ninth place in the 200 individual medley (2:17.79) and placed 18th for the 100 freestyle (56.86). Alora McCarroll came in 28th place in the 200 IM with a time of 2:32.55, and she also swam to 29th place in the 100 breaststroke at 1:18.59. The Yellowjackets’ other individual swimmer was Syreena Melendez, who took 25th place in the 100 breaststroke at 1:17.42.

In the relays, the Easties’ 200 medley squad of Kim, McCarroll, Bedoya, and Rosado placed eighth at 1:56.25; the 200 freestyle relay team of Bedoya, Angelica Blaze, Melendez, and Kim finished 11th with a mark of 1:49.27; and the 400 freestyle relay group of Gina DiVerniero, Ellyn DiVerniero, Jennyfer Jarrin, and McCarroll finished 15th at 4:23.07.

The Yellowjackets will be competing at Class LL State Championship, which takes place at Wesleyan University on Tuesday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m.

Volleyball

The Yellowjackets’ volleyball squad took on Amity in the SCC Tournament quarterfinals on Oct. 30 and was eliminated from the bracket by dropping a 3-1 (25-15, 22-25, 25-13, 25-21) decision against the Spartans. East Haven was the No. 6 seed in the tournament, while Amity was the No. 3 seed. Amity went on to lose to Guilford in the semifinal round. East Haven now owns an overall record of 17-5 as it gets ready to compete in this week’s Class M State Tournament.

East Haven is the No. 7 seed in the Class M bracket and will host No. 26 Ledyard for a first round match at 6 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 6. If the Yellowjackets win, they will host the winner of No. 10 Northwestern and No. 23 Ansonia in the second round on Wednesday, Nov. 8 at 6 p.m. The quarterfinals are on Friday, Nov. 10; the semis will be played on Tuesday, Nov. 14; and the final is at East Haven High School on Saturday, Nov. 18.

Football

The East Haven football took a 27-7 home loss to Creed-Carer-Whitney in a SCC Tier 3 contest at home on Nov. 3. The Yellowjackets are now 1-7 overall and 1-4 in Tier 3 on the year.

The Easties will play their final home game of the season when they host Tier 3 frontrunner Sheehan (7-1, 4-0) at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 10.
