Guilford Girls’ Cross Country Places 4th at State Open; Clarke Named SCC Field Hockey Player of the Year

Girls’ Cross Country

The Guilford girls’ cross country team came in fourth place as a group at the State Open Championship at Wickham Park in Manchester on Nov. 3.

Meredith Bloss finished in third place behind a time of 19 minutes and 28 seconds for the Indians. Also racing for Guilford were Jacqui Guerra (20th, 20:49), Gianna Siciliano (27th, 21:02), Clara Wiesler (33rd, 21:10), Emma Bonz (70th, 22:08), Alexis Sattler (99th, 22:55), and Claire Keanna (101st, 22:55).

Boys’ Cross Country

The Indians had one representative at last week’s State Open Championship meet. Elijah Dillon finishing in 136th place by running a time of 18 minutes and 25 seconds for the Indians.

Field Hockey

Guilford earned a win against Sacred Heart Academy in the SCC Tournament quarterfinals before taking a loss against Branford in the semifinal round last week.

The No. 4 seed Indians first defeated No. 5 Sacred Heart Academy 4-0 on Oct. 30 in a quarterfinal contest. Olivia Clarke scored two goals for Guilford, while Celia Mariconda and Ella Stanley also scored goals.

Facing top-seeded Branford in the semis on Nov. 1, the Indians took a 1-0 loss at Guilford High School. Branford scored a goal in the first 10 minutes of the game and went on to get the one-goal win. Guilford earned 13 corners in the defeat.

Last week, it was also announced that Clarke, a senior, received the Southern Connecticut Conference Player of the Year Award for the 2017 season.

Guilford (14-3-1) next plays in the Class M State Tournament, which begins on Tuesday, Nov. 7, when the 3rd-seeded Indians host No. 14 Lauralton Hall (6-9-0-2) at 7 p.m.

Football

The Indians hosted Law for a SCC Tier matchup on Nov. 3 and took a 13-7 defeat to move to 3-4 overall and 3-1 in Tier 3 games. Law improved to 4-4 overall and 3-2 in Tier 3.

Jack Strand completed eight of 15 passes for 72 yards and also ran the ball 23 times for 153 yards for Guilford. AJ Moscato rushed the ball 15 times for 99 yards and scored the Indians’ lone touchdown. Sean Russell had two catches for 20 yards, and Corey Sondak reeled in three receptions for 15 yards.

Defensively, Jack Gabriel led the Indians in tackles with 13.5, while Tyler Melillo added 11 tackles and had a fumble recovery. Moscato had six tackles and an interception, plus Anthony J. Avallone added five tackles to go with a sack. Carter Cox also had six tackles.

Law opened up the scoring quickly with a 50-yard TD strike. After that Guilford had a couple of long drives that stalled out in the red zone or ended in turnovers. The Indians eventually intercepted a pass, and sustained a drive that ended in Moscato's touchdown to start the second quarter. The point after was good, and the game was tied at 7 early in the second. Law answered quickly on a halfback screen that resulted in a 55-yard touchdown play. The point after was no good, and Guilford trailed 13-7. That held up as the final score as the Indians squandered several scoring opportunities.

"The difference in the game was giving up big plays, losing the turnover game, and inability to execute in some key situations," said Head Coach Anthony M. Avallone. "Disappointing is an understatement, but I continue to be proud of how they play until the final whistle."

Guilford next hosts Bassick (0-8, 0-4) for another SCC Tier 3 matchup on Friday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

Guilford finished in 15th place by scoring 183 points at the SCC Championship at Southern Connecticut State University on Nov. 1.

The Indians’ 200 medley relay of Sadie Booth, Chloe Shoff, Lea Chaudun, and Anna Angkattavanich finished 17th with a time of 2:35.06 for Guilford. Alex Mayo finished 13th in the 200 freestyle (2:03.87) and was 15th in the 100 free (56.40). The Indians’ 200 freestyle relay of Mayo, Haley Moriaritty, Julia Earle, and Elizabeth Hicks finished 15th (1:53.87), while their the 400 freestyle relay of Moriaritty, Mayo, Earle, and Hicks placed 14th (4:12.95).
