Boys’ Cross Country

The Haddam-Killingworth boys’ cross country team finished in fifth place as a team at the State Open Championship at Wickham Park in Manchester on Nov. 3.

Andrew Meredith came in 10th place by posting a time of 16 minutes and 35 seconds for the Cougars. H-K’s other runners were Jonah Spector (23rd, 16:56), Daniel Schumann (33rd, 17:08), Matt Jennings (49th, 17:26), Conor McCabe (68th, 17:47), Alex Inkel (82nd, 18:09), and Kurt Sodergren (116th, 18:53).

Girls’ Cross Country

H-K posted a fifth-place finish as a squad at the recent State Open Championship.

Competing for the Cougars at the meet were Kelsey D’Amico (15th, 20:24), Lexie Bouthillier (39th, 21:20), Grace Lindell (43rd, 21:23), Meara Bodak (45th, 21:30), Emma Anziano (77th, 22:16), Julianne Kelly (85th, 22:29), and Margaret Fisher (121st, 24:21).

Football

H-K improved to 5-3 after a posting a 35-13 home win over Lewis Mils on Nov. 3. The Cougars also moved to 4-2 in the Pequot League’s Sassacus Division with the win.

Dalton Modehn rushed for 192 yards on 15 carries with two touchdowns for Haddam-Killingworth. H-K opened the game with two first-quarter touchdowns, but Lewis Mills (1-7, 1-5) stayed in the game by scoring a touchdown late in the quarter. The tide turned back toward H-K’s favor just before the half when Jake Frith pounced on a bad snap in the end zone from the Lewis Mills punter. The Cougars cruised from that point on to notch their fifth win of the season.

“Parker Smith and Trey Callender bottled up the middle effectively from their positions on the interior of the defensive line, forcing the Spartans to run wide or pass the ball,” said Head Coach Mike Baklik. “We weren’t as crisp as we were last week against North Branford, but the kids got the job done tonight. We made some halftime adjustments that allowed us to move the ball better in the second half, so I like the way we responded to challenges early in the game.”

The Cougars will next host Old Saybrook-Westbrook (7-1, 6-1) for another Sassacus Division clash on Friday, Nov. 10 at 6:30 p.m.
