Warriors Shut Out North Branford, 23-0; Cross Country Squads Run at Shorelines

Football

The Valley Regional-Old Lyme Football team defeated North Branford 23-0 on the road in a Pequot League Sassacus Division matchup on Oct. 20. The Warriors’ record is now 5-1 overall and 4-1 in the division.

The Warriors led 3-0 after one, extended their lead to 9-0 at halftime, and then scored one touchdown in both the third and fourth quarters to defeat the T-Birds.

Mike Cullina had a strong night passing by going 9-for-16 for 116 yards and a touchdown, and he also ran for a TD. Nick Braga had a big game on the ground by gaining 121 yards on 14 carries. Jake Kruszewski added 47 rushing yards on seven carries and a touchdown. Ernest Jean-Pierre had four receptions for 78 yards and a touchdown, while Jaelen Arnum also had two receptions for 26 yards. Brian Funk kicked a pair of extra points for Valley.

On defense, Blair Allen led the Warriors in tackles with 13. Justin Robida was next with nine tackles and recorded a half-sack with Ian Nevasier. Josh Donahue had seven tackles, as did Jon Balocca. Roan Sullivan added six tackles, Jean-Pierre also had six tackles with an interception on defense, while Kruszewski reeled in an INT.

The Warriors will next play division opponent Cromwell-Portland (6-0, 5-0) at Pierson Park in Cromwell on Friday, Oct. 27 at 6 p.m.

Boys’ Cross Country

The Warriors competed at the Shoreline Conference Championship at Old Lyme High School on Oct. 20. The Warriors finished in seventh place at the meet.

Jason Montecavo took the highest place of Valley’s competitors by finishing 10th with a time of 18 minutes and 30 seconds and received All-Shoreline Conference First Team as a result. Also for Valley, Macklin Miezejeski finished 27th (19:51), Peter Halsey was 37th (20:16), Josh Arnum took 39th (20:17), Liam Miller came in 58th (21:38), Sean Davis finished 59th (21:44), and Marcus SantaMaria placed 63rd (22:08).

Girls’ Cross Country

Valley finished ninth place as a team at last week’s Shoreline Conference Championship.

Addie Byars posted the top showing for the Warriors by finishing sixth with a time of 21 minutes and 30 seconds and garnered All-Shoreline Conference First Team honors. The Valley pack also featured Caitlyn Bogan (49th, 25:45), Lacey Hall (54th, 26:32), Audrey Lenda (55th, 26:58), Charlotte Norling (61st, 28:36), and Hanna Babek (63rd, 28:52).

Volleyball

Valley played three matches last week and won two of them to put its record at 14-3 on the year.

On Oct. 16, the Warriors were at Cromwell and won 3-0 behind scores of 25-19, 25-20, and 25-18. Jessica Paholski led the team in kills with 10 and added nine digs, seven receptions, a block, and an ace. Heidi Clark had 23 digs, 17 receptions, two kills, and three aces, while Maddy Just had eight kills, six digs, three receptions, and an ace. Hannah Clark provided 32 assists, 10 digs, and six aces, and Alex Figuenick had 19 digs, 16 receptions, and two aces.

The next day, Valley faced off against Haddam-Killingworth and lost 3-1. Valley took the first set 25-23, but lost the next three by scores of 25-19, 25-18, and 25-20. Paholski had 29 digs, 13 kills, four blocks, and an ace, while Electra Cassells provided 26 digs, three blocks, and four kills. Figuenick had 44 digs, 22 receptions, three aces, and a kill, plus Hannah Clark added 28 assists and 12 digs.

Finally, on Oct. 20, the Warriors won at home against Old Lyme 3-0 (25-15, 25-5, and 25-14). Paholski had 10 digs, eight kills, and five aces, and Figuenick had 10 digs, seven receptions, and three aces. Heidi Clark provided 10 aces, nine digs, and a kill, while Hannah Clark had 10 aces and 17 assists.

Boys’ Soccer

The Warriors played two games last week, winning one and tying the other for a mark of 10-3-1.

On Oct. 17, Valley faced Cromwell on the road and the two teams played to a 1-1 tie. Three days later, Valley visited East Hampton and edged the Bellringers 2-1.

Girls’ Soccer

The Warriors took two losses and earned a tie last week to move to 4-4-6 on the season.

On Oct. 17, Valley lost on the road to Cromwell by a score of 2-1. Two days later, the Warriors were back on the road to match up with East Hampton and dropped a 3-1 decision. Then on Oct. 21, Valley was back home to host North Branford, and the two teams played to a 0-0 tie.
