Old Saybrook Boys’ Soccer Completes Perfect Regular Season; Field Hockey Qualifies for State Tourney

Boys’ Soccer

The Old Saybrook boys’ soccer team completed it second straight undefeated regular season by recording two wins last week to finish with a record of 16-0. The defending league champion Rams are competing in the Shoreline Conference Tournament this week.

On Oct. 23, the Rams played at East Hampton and won by a decisive 8-1 margin.

Three days later, Old Saybrook hosted Morgan and won 7-0. The Rams’ first goal came from Justin Phillips just before the end of the first half at 38:56. Old Saybrook followed by scoring six goals in the latter half. Paddy Ryan put a well-placed shot in the net off an assist from Phillips at 41:03, Anthony Karg grabbed a goal from Austin Hilger, and then Haydon Lockhart scored with an assist from Phillips. Jack Coella scored a goal from Karg at 57:24, and then Lockhart got his second goal at 63:57. Coella finished the scoring with a goal at 69:53 off a helper from Cooper Luciani. Jonah Nucci was in net and made four saves on the day.

Girls’ Soccer

The Rams notched a win and a tie in their last week of the season for a mark of 5-9-2 on the year.

On Oct. 23, Old Saybrook was on the road to face Valley Regional and grabbed a 2-1 victory over the Warriors. On Oct. 25, the Rams played Haddam-Killingworth to a 1-1 stalemate at home.

Field Hockey

Old Saybrook qualified for the Class S State Tournament after picking up a big win in its last week of the regular season. The Rams posted a record of 5-8-2-1 to qualify for states.

On Oct. 23, Old Saybrook went up against Morgan on the road and prevailed 4-2 to punch its ticket to states. Two days later, the Rams were at Weston and lost a 2-0 contest.

Girls’ Cross Country

The Rams headed to Wickham Park for the Class SS State Championship on Oct. 28. The team finished second overall with Grace Hanratty taking eighth place behind a time of 20:45 to earn All-State honors.

Additionally for Old Saybrook, Ally Castro finished 12th at 21:01, Tehra Givehand placed 15th with a time of 21:13, Julia Sultini finished 27th at 22:18, Ingrid Boland placed 46th with a mark of 23:50, Auutmn Szucs took 51st place by running a 24:05, and McKenzie Cart came in 62nd place at 24:40.

Boys’ Cross Country

Old Saybrook earned third place in the Class SS State Championship behind strong performances from several runners.

Shane Henderson had the best finish for the Rams by placing sixth with a time of 17:00 to make All-State. Old Saybrook’s other competitors were Lance Sigersmith (22nd, 18:20), Jacob Schneider (38th, 18:45), Ian Mason (40th, 18:48), Eric Sultini (47th, 19:00), Noah D’Ambrosie (87th, 20:03), and Jack Wiley (91st, 20:10).

Football

Old Saybrook-Westbrook hosted Coginchaug/Hale-Ray on Oct. 27 and earned an overwhelming 37-0 victory to run its record to 6-1 overall and 5-1 in the Pequot League Sassacus Division. The Rams are also ranked seventh in the Class S State Playoff rankings in which the top eight squads qualify.

In last week’s win, the Rams scoring opened in the first quarter with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Victor Pascoe to Andrew Naccarato, followed by a successful point-after attempt from Cooper Pavlovich that made it 7-0. Later in the quarter, Vincent Dyer scored on an 8-yard run to make it 14-0. In the second quarter, Pascoe returned a punt 50 yards for a score for a 21-0 advantage. Shortly thereafter, Coginchaug/Hale-Ray (3-4, 2-3) was backed up deep in its own territory and had to punt. Tanner Jones blocked the punt for a safety to make it 23-0 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Naccarato found the end zone on a 10-yard run, and Pavlovich’s kick extended the damage to 30-0. Then for the final score of the game, the Rams’ defense picked up some points when Dyer recovered a fumble in the end zone to put a bow on the 37-0 victory.

Old Saybrook will play at North Branford (4-3, 3-3) in a divisional game at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 3.
