Guilford's Girls Race to 2nd at States, While Boys Take 3rd; Soccer Teams Lose in SCC Quarters

Girls’ Cross Country

One week after winning the SCC Championship, the Guilford girls’ cross country team netted a second-place finish in the Class L State Championship at Wickham Park in Manchester on Oct. 28. Guilford tallied 83 points to come in second place behind Pomperaug (37 points) at the state meet.

Meredith Bloss made All-State by finishing in third place with a time of 19 minutes and 13 seconds for the Indians. Guilford’s other runners were Jacqui Guerra (9th, 20:29), Gianna Siciliano (11th, 20:36), Clara Wiesler (13th, 20:50), Emma Bonz (47th, 22:14), Alexis Sattler (59th, 22:41), and Claire Keanna (68th, 23:00).

Boys’ Cross Country

The Indians finished in third place at last week’s Class L State Championship meet. The Indians earned 118 points to finish behind runner-up Weston (74) and champion East Lyme (60).

Elijah Dillon came in 10th place behind a mark of 17:39 for Guilford. Also hitting the course for the Indians were Ben Crair (15th, 18:02), Will Smith (30th, 18:28), Brennan Kaisen (31st, 18:28), Brendan O’Callahan (32nd, 18:29), William Dinauer (36th, 18:33), Reese Puchalski (114th, 20:24).

Boys’ Soccer

Guilford concluded its regular season prior to competing in the SCC Tournament last week.

The Indians finished the regular season with a record of 14-1-1 following a 2-1 victory over Hand on Oct. 23. Guilford then drew the top seed in the SCC Tournament and faced No. 8 Career-Hillhouse in the quarterfinals on Oct. 28. After the teams were deadlocked 1-1 through regulation and two overtime periods, Career-Hillhouse came away with the victory by winning the penalty kick session, 5-4.

Guilford next begins the Class L State Tournament, which opens on Monday, Nov. 6.

Girls’ Soccer

The Indians finished their regular season with a record 8-3-5 and then began postseason play by competing in the SCC Tournament.

On Oct. 23, Guilford wrapped up the regular season by posting a 1-0 win over Lauralton Hall on Oct. 23. No. 5-seeded Guilford then traveled to No. 4 Shelton for a SCC Tournament quarterfinal contest on Oct. 28 and took a 2-0 defeat.

Guilford next plays in the Class L State Tournament that begins on Tuesday, Nov. 7.

Field Hockey

Guilford faced Haddam-Killingworth, Shelton, and Sheehan in its last week of the regular season and now gets ready to compete in the postseason.

The Indians started the week with a 6-0 shutout of Haddam-Killingworth on Oct. 23. Guilford turned around the next day to post an 8-1 victory over Shelton. The Indians finished the regular season at 13-2-1 following a 7-0 rout of Sheehan on Oct. 26.

Against H-K on Senior Night, Guilford’s goals were scored by seniors Meg Reynolds, Mallory Peters, and Olivia Clarke. Senior goalie Maggie Marrone earned the shutout in net. Contributions also were made by the team’s other seniors behind Emma Macy, Theresa Dell, Erica Jermacans, and Audrey Larrow on defense, as well as Bryce Makula in the midfield.

Fourth-seeded Guilford begins the SCC Tournament with quarterfinal play at home on Monday Oct. 30 against No. 5 Sacred Heart Academy. With a win, the Indians would face the winner of Branford and Amity in the semifinals, which will be played at Guilford on Wednesday, Nov. 1. The final is also at Guilford and takes place on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 2 p.m.

Football

Guilford took a 37-12 loss at Foran on Oct. 27 and is now 3-3 on the year.

The Indians scored their touchdowns in the first and fourth quarters against Foran. First, Jack Strand (264 yards passing; 7 rushes, 51 yards) scored on a 7-yard touchdown rush. Then in the final frame, Strand found Tyler Filley (5 catches, 124 yards) in the end zone on a 20-yard TD pass. However, the Lions (4-3) ran for three touchdowns and completed three TD passes in the game to come away with the victory.

On defense, Jack Gabriel led the Indians with 10.5 tackles, while Tyler Melillo had 10. Carter Cox had nine tackles, and AJ Moscato added 8.5. Charles Schioppo and Sam Jankura each had an interception for Guilford.

The Indians will next host Law for a SCC Tier 3 matchup on Friday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. Guilford is 3-0 in Tier 3, while Law is 2-2 in the tier and 3-4 overall.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

Guilford had its final meet of its first regular season last week. The Indians took an 85-78 loss to Branford on Oct. 24.
