Old Saybrook’s Cross Country Squads Place 2nd at Shorelines; Boys’ Soccer Continues Undefeated Season

Girls’ Cross Country

The Rams’ girls’ cross country team finished in second place at the Shoreline Conference Championship at Old Lyme High School on Oct. 20.

Grace Hanratty took third place overall in the race by crossing the finishing line in 21 minutes and 12 seconds. Tehra Givehand finished in fourth place for Old Saybrook (21:20) and was followed by Ally Castro (21:31), Julia Sultini (22:51), MacKenzie Cart (24:41), Autumn Szucs (42nd, 25:26), and Ingrid Boland (56th, 27:43).

Boys’ Cross Country

Old Saybrook took part in last week’s Shoreline Conference Championship and posted a second-place finish as a squad.

Shane Henderson took fourth place with a time of 17 minutes and 46 seconds to lead the pack for the Rams, whose other runners were Lance Sigersmith in 17th (18:56), Eric Sultini in 18th (19:08), Jacob Schneider in 21st (19:19), Ian Mason in 24th (19:32), and Noah D’Ambrosie in 33rd with a time of 20:08.

Boys’ Soccer

Old Saybrook played two games last week and stayed undefeated by notching two more wins to improve to 14-0.

On Oct. 17, the Rams hosted Old Lyme and defeated the Wildcats 8-1. Justin Phillips scored Old Saybrook’s first goal off an assist from Anthony Karg at 9:27. Phillips struck again at 21:31, this time assisted by Austin Hilger. Old Lyme got on the board to make it 2-1, but at 31:29, Hilger scored off a helper from Karg to bring the Rams’ lead back to two. Karg put one in the back of the net with an assist from Hilger at 34:19, and then Hilger scored at 38:44 on a penalty kick to make it 5-1 before the intermission.

In the second half, Paddy Ryan scored at 41:53 off an assist from Phillips, after which Phillips completed the hat trick by scoring off an assist from Hilger at 51:53. Ryan scored the final goal at 65:29. Old Saybrook launched 16 shots at net compared to six from Old Lyme. Jonah Nucci made three saves in net.

Three days later, Old Saybrook went up against Cromwell on the road and won 2-1. The Rams opened the scoring at 13:16 on a well-placed goal from Karg on an assist by Hilger. In the second half, Hilger scored an unassisted goal on a breakaway at 50:03. Cromwell netted a goal to make it 2-1, but Old Saybrook hung on for the win. The Rams outshot the Panthers 13-7, and Nucci made four saves in the net.

Girls’ Soccer

The Rams took three defeats last week and are now 4-9-1 on the campaign. On Oct. 16, Old Saybrook hosted Old Lyme and lost 6-0. Three days later, the team traveled to Cromwell and lost 4-0. Then on Oct. 21, the Rams were at Woodstock Academy and dropped a 3-0 contest.

Football

The Rams took their first loss of the year by losing a 12-6 game on the road against Portland-Cromwell in a Pequot League Sassacus Division matchup on Oct. 20. Old Saybrook-Westbrook is now 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the division.

Cromwell (6-0, 5-0) struck first with a touchdown pass in the second quarter to make it 6-0. OS-W responded with 17-yard run from Vincent Pascoe to tie the score. Before the end of the half, Cromwell-Portland got another pass into the end zone to make it 12-6.

Besides the second quarter, the game was a defensive stalemate that saw many Rams pile up the up tackles, including Vincent Dyer with 11, Andrew Naccarato with nine, Luke Duffy with seven, and Devon Moshier and David McCain with six apiece.

The Rams are set hit to the road to face off against divisional opponent Coginchaug/Hale-Ray (3-3, 2-2) in Durham on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 2 p.m.

Field Hockey

Old Saybrook split two games last week to bring its record to 4-7-2-1. On Oct. 16, the Rams went up against Farmington and won 3-2. Two days later, Old Saybrook squared off against North Branford and took a 3-2 defeat.
