North Haven’s Fall Ball Teams Have Great Weeks


North Haven’s fall baseball teams continued their seasons by picking up several recent victories. North Haven Maroon stayed on a roll by claiming two wins versus Wallingford and two more against DBI, while North Haven White swept a doubleheader from the Connecticut Cadets.

North Haven Maroon rallied for an 8-7 victory versus Wallingford on Oct. 15 by plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Kevin Lucey brought home Jake Bencivengo with the tying run on a sacrifice fly, and Peyton Farina scored the winning run when Mike Salzano was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Zack Pincince allowed two runs (1 earned) in three innings of relief, and Leo Konopka picked up the win after retiring the final batter of the top of the seventh. Peyton Farina went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a RBI, Konopka was 2-for-2 with a triple, a run scored, two RBI, and a stolen base; Zack Pincince went 2-for-3 with a triple, a walk, a run, and a RBI; Dave Christoforo tripled, walked, and drove home a pair of runs; and Lucey added a single with a run scored and a RBI.

The week after that win, North Haven Maroon earned a 5-1 home win over Wallingford on Oct. 17. Pincince got the win by pitching three shutout innings. Nate Zalegowski allowed one unearned run in one inning, after which Konopka, Chris Ciarleglio, and Luca Lawrence each pitched a scoreless inning, with Lawrence getting the save. Lucey had a single with a walk and a RBI, Farina and Hunter Garthwait both doubled and scored a run, Konopka added a double with a RBI, and Salzano also drove home a run. Jake Bencivengo walked twice and stole a base, while Zalegowski drew a pair of walks in the win.

On Oct. 21, North Haven Maroon swept a doubleheader from DBI behind final scores of 8-0 and 6-1. Ciarleglio pitched a three-hit shutout with seven strikeouts in the first game. Bencivengo went 4-for-4 with a RBI, and Garthwait was 3-for-3 with a double, a walk, three runs, scored and a RBI. Lucey socked a two-run home run, plus Salzano had two hits with a run and two RBI.

Zalegowski earned the win by giving up one unearned run through six innings in North Haven’s 6-1 win in the nightcap. Garthwait pitched a scoreless seventh to close it out. Gianni DeMartino had two hits and scored two runs with a stolen base, Christoforo had a single and a double, Andrew Laudano tripled with two RBI, Bencivengo had a hit with two RBI and a stolen base, and Farina had two hits and stole two bases for North Haven.

North Haven White took an 11-2 loss to Branford at home on Oct. 15. Danny Cannavaciolo had a single and scored a run, Cole Zalegowski walked and scored a run, while Jack Persuo walked and had a RBI.

Then on Oct. 21, North Haven took two from the Connecticut Cadets by winning 6-5 and 15-5. In the opener, North Haven trailed 5-3 before taking the lead for good on a three-run home run by Jason Landino in the sixth inning. Nick Rossi had two hits with a walk, a run and a RBI; Anthony Cretella and Cannavaciolo both drew two walks and scored a run, and John Gontarek had a hit with a walk and a RBI. David Turcio got the win in relief by allowing two unearned runs in two innings. Jack Peruso got the save by pitching a scoreless seventh.

In the second game, North Haven broke open a close contest by plating eight runs in the sixth inning for a 15-5 victory. Rossi earned the win by tossing two scoreless innings of relief. Mason Balmer went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a RBI, Rossi was 3-for-3 with a double, two runs, two RBI, and a stolen base; Cretella went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI, Daniel Meyers doubled with a run and two RBI, Alex Page singled twice and scored two runs, and Gontarek walked twice with a double, a run, and a RBI.
