The Guilford volleyball team hit the court for divisional matches against Career and Mercy, while also facing non-conference opponent Harding last week. The Indians won all three contests to improve to 17-1 overall and win the Oronoque Division title with a perfect record of 8-0.
The Indians posted a 3-0 sweep over division opponent Career (25-10, 25-14, 25-12) on Oct. 16. Trinity Flynn had three kills and five aces, while Jessica Decensi added five kills. Lilly Ulrich had three kills, and Juliet Young fired eight aces and had four digs for the Indians.
Guilford wrapped up divisional play with a 3-0 sweep of Mercy the next night, followed by a 3-0 win over Harding (25-10, 25-5, 25-14) on Oct. 18. Facing Harding, Hunter Halbower had four kills and three blocks, Sam Seneco added six kills and a block, plus Leah Kornguth finished 21-of-21 on serving with four aces and three kills.
Field Hockey
The Indians split matchups against Branford and Hand last week to stand at 10-2-1 this year.
Guilford took a 2-1 loss to Branford on Oct. 17. The Indians then beat Hand by a 2-0 final on Oct. 19. Celia Mariconda and Ella Stanley scored the two goals against Hand, and Nicolette Spotlow made nine saves.
Boys’ Soccer
Guilford faced off against Notre Dame-West Haven, Xavier, and Cheshire last week and came away with a tie, a win, and a loss. The Indians are now 13-1-1 overall and finished 6-1-1 in the SCC Oronoque Division.
The Indians played to a 1-1 draw with Notre Dame-West Haven in a divisional game on Oct. 16. Guilford next edged out Xavier by a 1-0 score on Oct. 18. The Indians then took their first defeat of the season by dropping a 2-1 contest against Oronoque opponent Cheshire on Oct. 21.
Eric Lepeak scored Guilford’s goal against Notre Dame-West Haven on a free kick before the Green Knights tied it with 20 minutes left in the contest.
Sam Dombroski netted the Indians’ goal versus Xavier with an assist from John Hess. Ian Slattery made six saves for Guilford.
Against Cheshire, Braden Stephens scored from Dombroski for the Indians, who saw Slattery make four saves. The Rams scored twice in the second half to win the game and the Oronoque Division title.
Boys’ Cross Country
The Indians finished in seventh place with 194 points at the SCC Championship on Oct. 19 at East Shore Park in New Haven.
Brennan Kaisen came in 30th place with a time of 17:41 for the Indians, whose other runners were Elijah Dillon (32nd, 17:46), Ben Crair (41st, 18:00), Reese Puchalski (44th, 18:12), Will Smith (47th, 18:17), Nathan Van Zandt (49th, 18:20), and Will Dinauer (62nd, 18:35).
