Rams’ Boys’ Soccer Refuses to Lose; Henderson Runs to Victory at Shoreline Mega Meet

Boys’ Soccer

The Old Saybrook boys’ soccer team prevailed in all three of its games last week to continue its undefeated season with a record of 12-0.

On Oct. 10, the Rams were at Westbrook and posted a 4-0 victory over the Knights.

Then on Oct. 13, Old Saybrook hosted East Hampton and won 4-0 once again. The Rams notched their first goal at 5:47, when Austin Hilger booted one home on a helper from Justin Phillips. Later in the first half, Sebby Gallitto put one in the net at 21:19 off another assist from Phillips. After halftime, Phillips netted a goal at 59:16 on an assist from Hilger. Jack Coella grabbed the final goal less than a minute later on another assist by Phillips. Old Saybrook outshot the Bellringers 23-7, with Jonah Nucci making four saves in net.

East Lyme came to town the following day, and the Rams scored another win with a 5-1 victory. Old Saybrook got to work quickly on offense with a Phillips goal at 4:38 on assist by Paddy Ryan. Phillips struck again less than three minutes later off a helper from Anthony Karg. Phillips then locked down the hat trick with an unassisted goal at 16:49. East Lyme scored its lone goal at 19:53. After that, Karg put the ball in the back of the net on an unassisted goal. There were no more goals scored until the last 10 minutes of the match, when Gallitto got a pass from Coella and put it past the keeper at 73:32. Old Saybrook posted 15 shots to East Lyme’s six, and Nucci had two saves in net.

Girls’ Soccer

The Rams played back-to-back games last week and won them both to improve their record to 4-6-1 on the year.

On Oct. 11, Old Saybrook went up against Westbrook on the road and won 6-1. The next day, the Rams grabbed a narrow 1-0 victory over East Hampton at home.

If the Rams can secure four more points in the standings, they will qualify for the Class S State Tournament.

Boys’ Cross Country

The Rams’ boys’ cross country squad headed to Old Lyme for the Shoreline Conference Mega Meet on Oct. 12. Old Saybrook senior Shane Henderson took first place in the boys’ seeded race behind a time of 17:57.

Girls’ Cross Country

Old Saybrook’s saw three runners finish in the top 10 at last week’s Shoreline Conference Mega Meet. Junior Tehra Givehand and sophomores Grace Hanratty and Ally Castro all finished with a time of 22:34 to place eighth, ninth, and 10th, respectively, in the girls’ seeded race.

Field Hockey

Old Saybrook had two games on the docket last week and came away with a tie to move to 3-6-2-1 on the year.

On Oct. 10, The Rams were at home to match up with Waterford, and the game ended in a 0-0 tie.

On Oct. 13, Old Saybrook hosted Valley Regional and lost a the contest by a narrow 1-0 margin.
