Girls’ Cross Country

The Indians’ girls’ cross country team swept a tri-meet against Hand and Foran at the Surf Club in Madison on Oct. 12 to finish 13-0 for the dual-meet season with a record of 4-0 in the SCC Hammonasset Division. As a result, Guilford claimed its 11th Hammonasset Division title since 2004 this year.

Guilford defeated both host Hand (20-35) and Foran (17-44) in last week’s meet. Meredith Bloss and Jacqui Guerra finished in first and second place, respectively, with their times of 19:29. Gianna Siciliano placed third (20:09), Alyssa Lent was seventh (20:22), Clara Weisler finished ninth (20:25), and Alexis Sattler came in 13th (20:51) for the Indians.

Boys’ Cross Country

The Guilford boys’ cross country squad defeated Hand and Foran in a tri-meet last week to win its third straight SCC Hammonasset Division title and its ninth since 2008. The Indians finished 8-1 overall on the dual-meet season and were 4-0 in the division.

Guilford bested Hand 15-50 and beat Foran by the score of 20-43 on Oct. 12. Elijah Dillon (2nd, 16:54), Brennan Kaisen (3rd, 17:03), Ben Crair (4th, 17:18), Will Smith (5th, 17:21), Reese Puchalski (6th, 17:22), and Evan Ghoreyeb (8th, 17:35) were Guilford’s competitors at the meet.

Boys’ Soccer

Guilford played two divisional games, along with a non-conference contest against East Lyme last week, and came away with three wins to improve to 12-0 this year.

The Indians notched a 3-1 victory over Cross on Oct. 10. Guilford then edged out East Lyme 2-0 on Oct. 12. After that, the Indians routed East Haven 7-0 on Oct. 14 to stand at 6-0 in the SCC Oronoque Division.

Against Cross, the Indians were bolstered by two goals by Sam Dombroski (one that was assisted by Eric Lepeak) and a goal by Mete Yanbul.

Dombroski (off a corner kick by John Hess) and Lepeak scored against East Lyme, which the Indians held to just one shot on goal.

Facing East Haven, Guilford’s goals were scored by Hess (2), Yanbul (2), Ben Panagoulias, Niall O’Brien, and Hugh Medvecky. Assists came from Justin O’Leary, Noah Kosh, Panagoulias, and O’Brien. The Indians outshot East Haven 17-2.

Girls’ Soccer

The Indians had a pair of divisional bouts versus West Haven and Foran last week, earning ties in both contests to move to 5-3-4 overall and 3-0-3 in the SCC Hammonasset Division. Guilford has qualified for the Class L State Tournament.

Guilford tied West Haven 1-1 on Oct. 10 to seal its spot in states. Guilford’s goal was by Gabi Garcia-Perez and the assist went to Tatum Meder. The Indians outshot the Blue Devils by a wide margin, 23-4. In first half, Guilford built up momentum and possession, putting pressure on the West Haven defense, but struggled to get clean chances on goal.

Twenty minutes in, West Haven had a counter-attack, beating two Guilford defenders on the left side before a cross and clean finish to the right corner of the goal. The Indians maintained control and strung together a nice combination, beginning with Maria Jennings passing to Abbey Vilaseca, who found Meder, who then combined with Garcia-Perez to tie the game.

In second half, Guilford turned its possession into many offensive chances and shots on goal, although West Haven’s netminder handled everything that came to her.

“This was a hard tie for the team due to the domination we had overall in the game. It’s important that we take the great parts of the game and not get down about the score,” said Head Coach Scott McMahon. “Soccer can be tough when it comes to the ultimate payoff of goals. We will continue to focus on finishing while developing the overall chemistry of the team. We’re looking forward to our next three games against division opponents as we aim for the Hammonasset Division crown.”

After tying West Haven, the Indians played to a scoreless stalemate against Foran on Oct. 13.

Volleyball

Guilford took its first defeat of the season last week, but still posted wins over West Haven and Bassick for a record of 14-1.

The Indians moved to 6-0 in the SCC Oronoque Division with a 3-0 sweep of West Haven on Oct. 10. Guilford then defeated Bassick 3-0 (25-6, 25-7, 25-2) the next day. Hunter Halbower had five kills, Emma Appleman added nine aces and five assists, plus Leah Kornguth was 7-of-7 on serving with an ace.

Guilford later dropped its first contest of the year by a 3-2 final against Branford on Oct. 13.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

Guilford hit the waters to square off against Shelton and Law last week. The team took a 120-47 defeat to Shelton on Oct. 11 and lost 104-68 to Law on Oct. 13.

Football

The Indians are now 3-2 after taking a 31-21 home loss to non-conference opponent Brookfield on Oct. 13.

Brookfield led 7-0 at the half and then returned a fumble recovery for a score to make it 14-0. Later on, Brookfield (3-2) scooped up a fumble and scored on a 3-yard pass to bring it to a 21-0 score.

With three minutes left in the third quarter, Guilford’s Ethan Vashel found Tyler Filley on a 14-yard touchdown pass to make it a 21-7 game. Filley later returned a punt 72 yards to end the quarter. AJ Moscato took care of the rest and ran it in from five yards away to make it a one-score game at the start of the fourth. However, Bobcats padded their lead with a 2-yard TD rush and a 20-yard field goal. The Indians scored a touchdown on a 5-yard pass from Vashel to Miles Gabriel, but Brookfield came way with the 31-21 victory.

“It was a tough loss for Guilford. We couldn’t overcome our turnovers. They turned four turnovers into 24 points,” said Head Coach Anthony Avallone. “It was too deep of a hole for us to overcome despite a valiant effort, literally to the last play of the game. Offensively, Ethan Vashal, our backup quarterback, did an admirable job in replacement of Jack Strand, who is still recovery from a non-throwing shoulder injury.”

Avallone noted many positives in the defeat, including his backs and receivers, along with the return game in the special teams department.

“AJ Moscato ran hard for us, and Sean Russell made some outstanding receptions and some significant yards after the catch,” said Avallone. “The real story of our night was the outstanding play our special teams. They gave a chance to compete all the way until the end of the game. Tyler Filley was exceptional for us on [punt returns]. Brookfield is an outstanding program, which has been in multiple state championship runs over the past few years. It was a great test for our team.”

After a bye week, the Indians face SCC Tier 2 squad Foran (3-2) on the road on Friday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m.
