Volleyball

The Valley Regional volleyball team played a trio of matches last week and won all three contests to stand at 10-1 this season. The Warriors have won their last 10 matches and clinched a berth in the Class M State Tournament.

On Oct. 2, Valley had a home match against North Branford and swept all three sets, winning 25-23, 25-16, and 25-19. Jessica Paholski scored five aces, 11 kills, and three digs, while Hannah Clark offered two aces, 11 service points, and 30 assists. Emily Hutchinson had a new season-high for herself with eight kills to go with one block, while Electra Cassells provided a block with six kills. Heidi Clark served up three aces, four kills, and two digs, and Maddy Just had three aces and six kills for Valley.

On Oct. 4, the Warriors had a match against Coginchaug and won 3-1 (21-25, 25-17, 25-21, and 25-22). Coginchaug started aggressively by returning shots that would have been kills against most other teams. Valley served at an 83-percent clip, but had more service errors than aces. Cassells had two aces, 10 kills and 10 digs, while Heidi Clark provided five aces, three kills, 10 digs, and a block. Hannah Clark had two aces, 27 assists, and three digs. Paholski scored nine kills, an ace, and 11 digs, while Just had an ace, four kills, and six digs. Hutchinson had four kills and two blocks, plus Alex Figuenick went a perfect 17-of-17 on serve with an ace, a kill, and nine digs.

Two days later, the Warriors closed their week with a 3-0 win against East Hampton behind scores of 25-15, 25-12, and 25-18. The Bellringers showed a stronger effort in the second meeting between the teams, but Valley was particularly focused following its performance against Coginchaug. The Warriors’ serve percentage increased to 87.5 percent with an ace percentage of 41. Valley served and passed much better, totaling 30 aces, 63 attacks, and 25 kills on the night. Heidi Clark had seven aces, three kills, four digs, and a block, while Paholski had three aces to go with nine kills. Just served up nine aces, three kills, and three digs, and Hannah Clark supplied three aces, a kill, and 24 assists. Figuenick had another perfect serving night at 16-of-16 to go with seven aces and seven digs. Hutchinson had three kills and a block, Cassells had six kills, a block, and three digs, and Maddy Just served 17-for-19 with nine aces.

Boys’ Soccer

The Warriors claimed victory in both of last week’s matches to improve their record to 7-3 on the year, while punching a ticket to the Class M State Tournament.

On Oct. 4, Valley was on the road to face Old Lyme and won by a score of 2-1. The Warriors struck first when Chris Morales scored five minutes into the game off an assist from Charlie Ferrucci on a corner kick. Old Lyme sent the equalizer into the net 10 minutes later for a 1-1 halftime score. After intermission, Charlie Ferrucci set up an assist from the wing, and Ryan Shasha delivered a goal on a header with 15 minutes left in the contest. Goalkeeper Charlie Haughton held his ground when had to make a game-saving stop with less he than two minutes remaining. The Warriors outshot Old Lyme 20-11 and had eight corner kicks to the Wildcats’ two.

On Oct. 6, Valley was at North Branford and came away with a 2-0 victory. The Warriors scored their first goal just eight minutes into the contest on a penalty kick from Adrian Sperzel to go up 1-0. That score held through halftime until the 63-minute mark, when Ferrucci was taken down and scored on the subsequent penalty shot. North Branford pushed the offense in the last 10 minutes, but Haughton and the Warriors defense didn’t let anything get by.

Girls’ Soccer

The Warriors took a 1-0 loss to North Branford in their lone game of the week. Valley’s record is now 2-2-4 on the season.

Field Hockey

Two days later, Valley faced off against Morgan at home and lost 2-1.

Then on Oct. 6, the Warriors welcomed East Lyme to Valley Regional High School and defeated the Vikings by a score of 3-0. Rider notched two goals with an assist, O’Lynnger scored a goal to go with an assist, while Cooper and Riley Millburne both had an assist for Valley, which saw Cost make six saves.
