North Branford Football Shreds Lewis Mills; Field Hockey Remains Unbeaten

Football

The North Branford football team improved its record to 4-1 following a 48-0 thumping of Lewis Mills on the road on Oct. 7. The Thunderbirds improved to 4-1 overall and are 3-1 in the Pequot League’s Sassacus Division with the victory.

After scoring 13 points in the first half, North Branford exploded for 28 points in the third quarter to put the game away versus Lewis Mills (0-5, 0-3). Running back Nick Mancini, who finished the game with 77 yards on the ground, opened the scoring in the first quarter by taking home a 7-yard touchdown run. In the second quarter, quarterback Jeff Jablonski connected with Dylan Dinapoli on a 12-yard touchdown pass to increase the lead to 13-0.

In the third quarter, Jablonski ran home a 25-yard touchdown and then threw a 54-yard scoring strike to Sydney Franklin to help blow the game open. Brett Lequire scooted home on an 82-yard touchdown run before Brandon Fratta tossed a 24-yard touchdown to Dinapoli. In the fourth quarter, RJ Sobask closed out the T-Birds’ big day by scoring on a 10-yard rush.

Jablonski finished the game 9-for-12 passing for 151 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while Fratta completed both his passes for 34 yards and a touchdown. North Branford totaled 300 rushing yards and out-gained Lewis Mills 485-82 on the day.

Defensively, Mancini led the way with 10 tackles for North Branford, which recorded four sacks as a squad.

After a week off, North Branford will host Valley Regional-Old Lyme (3-1, 2-1) for another Sassacus Division contest on Friday, Oct. 20 with the kickoff slated for 6:30 p.m.

Field Hockey

The Thunderbirds won their lone game last week with a thrilling 1-0 overtime victory against Haddam-Killingworth on the road. The win moved North Branford to 10-0-1 for the year, keeping the T-Birds undefeated. Jordan Regan made three saves in the shutout for the T-Birds, who saw Ava Galdenzi net the game-winning goal on an assist by Amy Raucci in the overtime session.

Boys’ Soccer

North Branford dropped both its matches last week to move to 4-6-1 for the year.

On Oct. 3, Portland defeated the T-Birds 2-1. After that, North Branford dropped a 2-0 decision against Valley Regional.

Volleyball

The T-Birds split their two matches last week to stand at 4-8 for the season.

On Oct. 2, North Branford lost a 3-0 (25-12, 25-16, 25-19) contest against Valley Regional. Sofia Cavalier had four kills and contributed five digs, while Nina Robertson had a team-best eight digs for the T-Birds. North Branford came back by posting a 3-0 win against Creed on Oct. 6.
