Knights’ Field Hockey Wins Twice to Reach States; Girls’ Soccer Also Takes Two

Field Hockey

The Westbrook field hockey squad both of its games last week to improve to 5-1-3 on the season and clinch a spot in the Class S State Tournament.

On Oct. 3, the Knights matched up at home against Old Saybrook and won 4-1. The Rams scored first midway through the first half to make it 1-0. As time expired in the half, Westbrook’s Avery Bauman tied the game at 1-1 by scoring off a penalty corner on assists from Alex Young and Carolyn Bauman. In the second half, Westbrook broke the game open by converting three goals. Sophomore Lexi Koplas netted her first career goal on a helper from Alex Young, Olivia Hartzell scored a goal by redirecting a shot from Avery Bauman, and then Katherine Dahl scored on a penalty corner on an assist from Kendall Orlowski. Orlowski and senior captain Lauren Wright stepped up the defensive effort for Westbrook, which saw Lauren Horne make six saves in the cage.

Two days later, the Knights played Stafford at home and won by a score of 2-0. Avery Bauman scored on an assist from Dahl in the first half. In the second half, Alex Young scored a goal from Avery Bauman. Jamie Merola, Alana Bochanis, and Kendall Orlowski led the defense, helping Horne earn her third shutout on the season. Westbrook’s defense held Stafford to no shots on goal.

Girls’ Soccer

Westbrook won two of its three games in last week’s action to put its record at 4-6-1 this year.

On Oct. 2, the Knights were at home against Haddam-Killingworth and lost 2-0. Two days later, Westbrook traveled to Bassick and won in a 4-0 shutout. Then on Oct. 7, Westbrook played Hale-Ray on the road and won by another 4-0 final.

Boys’ Soccer

The Knights had a couple of games last week and split them to move their record to 4-6 on the season.

On Oct. 3, Westbrook played a home game against Haddam-Killingworth and lost 8-0. Then on Oct. 7, the Knights headed to Hale-Ray for a road match and defeated the Noises in a close game, 3-2.
