Both Huskies’ Soccer Squads Qualify for State Tournament

Girls’ Soccer

The Morgan girls’ soccer team avenged a couple of losses from last season in its two matches last week, claiming a pair of victories to improve to 7-2-1 and qualify for the Class M State Tournament.

On Oct. 2, the Huskies played East Lyme at home and won 3-1. The bulk of the scoring took place in the first half with the Huskies putting two in net and East Lyme getting its goal. Morgan picked up its third goal in the second half to seal the win.

Courtney Viglione put the ball past the Vikings’ keeper twice on the day, and Robyn Vuilleumier scored the other goal for Morgan. Alyssa LeMay had two helpers, while Issy Ranaudo also had an assist. Morgan launched 16 shots at goal to East Lyme’s five. Rebbecca Cockley made four saves for the Huskies.

On Oct. 5, Morgan was home again to face Old Saybrook and won by a score of 4-1. Viglione added two more goals to her season total, while Kylee Clifton and Carley Schmidt each had one. Vuilleumier, Maddie Stopkoski, and Halle Dicrosta each had one assist apiece. Morgan outshot Old Saybrook 10-5, and Cockley had four saves in net.

Boys’ Soccer

Morgan had two matches last week and got a split to move to 6-2-1 on the year. The Huskies have qualified for the Class S State Tournament.

On Oct. 3, the Huskies played Hale-Ray and scored a decisive 6-0 win. Jhan Carlos Bermeo scored the first two goals at 13 minutes and 32 minutes, after which Jhonnyer Paida got in on the action with a goal at 35 minutes. Bermeo secured a hat trick with a goal at the 45-minute mark, and Juan Avila added two goals at 65 minutes and at 70 minutes.

James Saturno recorded two assists, while Avila, Bermeo, and Andrew Passante all provided one assist. Morgan launched 18 shots at goal compared to Hale-Ray’s three, and Anes Gadun made two saves in net for the Huskies.

On Oct. 6, Morgan hosted Old Saybrook and lost 2-1 to the Rams.

Field Hockey

Morgan played a pair of matches last week and won one of them to put its record at 2-5-2 on the season.

On Oct. 2, the Huskies lost a matchup against East Catholic by a score of 1-0. Then two days later, Morgan secured a victory by the final score of 2-1 against Valley Regional.

Volleyball

The Huskies took three defeats last week and are now 4-7 on the season.

On Oct. 2, Morgan headed to Coginchaug for a road game against the Blue Devils and lost 3-0 (25-10, 25-16, and 25-15). Georgia Nye had six kills and a block. Madison Seeger notched two blocks and eight digs, and Taylor Marnett had 15 digs for the Huskies.

On Oct. 4, the Huskies were at Cromwell and took a 3-0 defeat. Then on Oct. 6, Morgan was back at home to face Haddam-Killingworth and lost 3-0. Nye scored 11 kills, while Marnett had 29 receptions and 20 digs. Charlotte Davenport recorded three aces and a block.

Football

Morgan played Nonnewaug at home at the Peters Complex and lost 30-22 on Oct. 6. Morgan moves to 0-5 on the season and, following a week off, will host Ellington on Friday, Oct. 20 at 6:30 p.m.
