Boys’ Soccer

The Haddam-Killingworth boys’ soccer team battled against Westbrook, Cromwell, and East Hampton for a trio of Shoreline Conference matchups last week. The Cougars pitched three straight shutouts to improve to 7-2-1, while clinching a spot in the Class M State Tournament.

H-K recorded an 8-0 shutout over Westbrook on Oct. 3 and then clinched ots spot in states with a 4-0 blanking of Cromwell the following day. H-K finished off its unbeaten week by notching a 7-0 whitewash against East Hampton on Oct. 6.

Girls’ Soccer

The Cougars grabbed their first victory of the season by blanking Westbrook 2-0 on Oct. 2. H-K also took a 5-1 loss to East Hampton on Oct. 6 and a 3-0 defeat against North Branford the next day to move to 1-7-1 on the year.

Field Hockey

H-K stands at 4-3-1-2 after facing off against North Branford, Old Saybrook, and Pomperaug this past week.

H-K took a 1-0 overtime loss to North Branford on Oct. 2, played to a 0-0 tie with Old Saybrook three days later, and lost a 5-1 contest against Pomperaug on Oct. 7.

Football

The Cougars’ football squad took a 46-21 road loss against Coventry-Windham Tech-Bolton-Lyman Memorial on Oct. 6 to move to 2-3 on the year. Jake Frith rushed for 125 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries, while Dalton Modehn gained 103 yards on 18 carries for Haddam-Killingworth.

After two scores by Coventry (5-0) in the first quarter, H-K came back and scored a TD in the second quarter to tighten the game. However, Coventry’s run game proved too much throughout the rest of the second as the Patriots took a 30-7 halftime lead. The teams played an even second half with both scoring two touchdowns.

“Freshman Thomas Perry played the entire game and did a solid job at offensive guard. Perry was called into service late in the week due to Cougar injuries,” said H-K Head Coach Mike Baklik. “Coventry is well coached, and they have a solid group of seniors who’ve been playing together since freshman year. We had a tough time stopping their run game, but I like the way our kids continued to battle.”

After a week off, the Cougars will travel to Nonnewaug for a 1 p.m. kickoff on Saturday, Oct. 21.

Boys’ and Girls’ Cross Country

On Oct. 3, the H-K cross country program continued its dual-meet season by competing at the Floyd Parness Invitational at Totoket Park in North Branford. Both teams went undefeated on the afternoon as the boys improved their record to 11-0, while the girls team moved to 10-0 on the season.

The H-K boys’ team ran a controlled race as a pack toward the front to outdistance itself from the field. The boys defeated Old Lyme, Old Saybrook, Morgan, Valley Regional, North Branford each by 15-50 finals to go with a 25-36 victory versus Guilford 25-36. Finishing together in places three through nine with a time of 18:05 for the 3.1-mile course were Matt Jennings, Daniel Schumann, Jonah Spector, Kurt Sodergren, Conor McCabe, Andrew Meredith, and Kyle Criscuolo.

The girls’ team also raced as a pack on its way to defeating Old Lyme (15-40), Old Saybrook (15-50), Valley Regional (20-40), Morgan (20-44), and North Branford (15-44). The Cougars were led by Kelsey D’Amico, Lexie Bouthillier, Grace Lindell, Julie Kelly, and Meara Bodak, who raced together and finished with the same time of 22:08 to place third through seventh, respectively, for the 5,000-meter course.

On Sept. 30, H-K traveled to Jackson, New Jersey to compete in the Six Flags Wild Safari Invitational, a meet that featured 90 schools from New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut.

The H-K boys’ varsity team, which is now ranked sixth in Connecticut, competed in the Varsity E race and came away with the team title by placing first with 26 points. The team was led by Schumann, who not only won the race in a time of 16:13 for the 5K course, but also ran the fastest time out of anyone of the entire meet. Finishing behind him were Spector in third (16:22), Meredith at fifth (17:00), McCabe in sixth (17:09), and Sodergren at 11th (17:34). Rounding out the varsity squad were Criscuolo in 12th (17:41) and Seth Freeman at 13th (17:44.

The girls’ varsity squad also won its race in the Varsity E division with a total of 31 points. The girls were led by D’Amico, who won the race in a time of 20:02. Maggie Fisher rounded out the varsity squad as she placed 19th in a time of 21:43 for the 3.1-mile course.

The JV and freshman boys’ squads also performed well as they both placed first as a team in their races. The JV team was led by the trio of Cougars at the front of the race. Freshman Matt Jennings won the race in a time of 17:58 and was followed closely across the line by seniors Alex Inkel in third (18:08) and Michael Callis at fifth (18:11). The freshman boys were led by Julian Spector and Fisher Harris, who placed third and fourth with times of 12:05 and 12:06, respectively, for the two-mile course.
