The Guilford football team traveled to East Haven on Oct. 6 and emerged with a 35-0 victory in an SCC Tier 3 matchup. The Indians improved to 3-1 overall and are one of three teams with a 3-0 record in Tier 3, alongside Lyman Hall and Sheehan.

Guilford got the scoring started early with an 80-yard touchdown run by Jack Strand (3 rushes, 85 yards) for a 6-0 advantage. After a strong defensive stand by Guilford, the Indians and Yellowjackets battled back and forth before Guilford added another score early in the second quarter on a 5-yard touchdown run by AJ Moscato (14 rushes, 72 yards), who also took in the 2-point conversion to put the visitors up 14-0. Guilford added another touchdown before halftime on a long run by Corey Sondak (3 catches, 81 yards; 3 rushes 45 yards) on which he broke several tackles before scoring. The extra point by Lucas Napolitano was good, and the Indians went into halftime up 21-0.

After halftime, Guilford went on defense and stopped East Haven (1-4, 1-2) again. Late in the third quarter, following a heavy pass rush by the Indians’ defensive line, Jack Gabriel intercepted a hurried throw and returned it 65 yards for a touchdown. The extra point was once again good and the Indians led 28-0. The scoring finished up when Ethan Vashel (4-of-7 passing, 89 yards) hit Sondak on a 65-yard completion that saw Sondak made a shoestring catch and use his speed to reach the end zone. The point after was good to put a bow on Guilford’s 35-0 victory.

For the Indians’ defense, Jack Gabriel, Miles Gabriel, and Tom Spinner each had an interception with Spinner also recovering a fumble. Spinner recorded two sacks, while Jack Gabriel and Bret Skapczynski both had one. For tackles, Jack Gabriel led with 8.5 and right behind him were Carter Cox (7), Spinner and Tanner Small (6.5 each); Skapczynski, Tyler Melillo, and Will Lawrence (5.5), Anthony J. Avallone (4), Miles Gabriel (3.5), plus Moscato and Vashel (2.5).

“The big stories on the evening were a huge offensive game by Corey Sondak and an unbelievable game by the Guilford defense. The defense was the star of the evening with an evening full of big stops and hard hits,” said Head Coach Anthony M. Avallone. “One play in particular that seems to be a reflection of our attitude as a team was when one of our [defensive linemen] chased down East Haven’s fastest back 30 yards downfield for what was sure-to-be a touchdown. We are working each day for ways to improve and fine tune our skills. We are looking at all opportunities that can help us to become a total team. We continue to make strides in that direction, but want to be cautiously mindful of the work that is ahead of us in order to achieve that.”

The Indians next play host to non-conference opponent Brookfield (2-2) on Friday, Oct. 13 with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
