Boys’ Soccer

The Valley Regional boys’ soccer team hit the field for a pair of matchups last week and won both games to improve its record to 5-3 on the season.

On Sept. 25, the Warriors welcomed Westbrook to Deep River and recorded an 8-0 victory versus the Knights. Valley’s first score was an own-goal on a deflection off a Westbrook player. After that, Chris Morales put one into the net off a helper from Kevin Baldwin to make it 2-0 by the 15-minute mark. Not long after, Michael Dilger scored with an assist from Charlie Ferrucci, and then Jaden Vega grabbed a goal on a Sean Cole assist to increase the lead to 4-0 after 30 minutes. Valley kept putting the ball in the net as Ryan Shasha scored off an assist from Vega, Kevin Michel notched a goal on an assist by Logan Bellos, Sam Ocken picked up a goal from Michel, and then Shasha closed out the 8-0 victory by converting a goal on an assist from Chris Morales. Charlie Haughton and Chris Sparaco each made a few saves in net for the Warriors, who took 26 shots on Westbrook’s goalie.

Two days later, Valley had a home game against East Hampton and scored a decisive 4-0 victory against the Bellringers. Dilger scored an early tap-in goal early off an assist by Shasha for a 1-0 lead. Later in the first half, Cole connected on a pass from Dilger to make it 2-0 before intermission. In the second half, Cole got the ball to Ferrucci for a goal and a 3-0 advantage. After that, Cameron Ruel hit a cross to Cole, who netted the fourth goal for Valley Regional.

Both teams were undefeated heading into the match, and it was an exciting duel that featured more than 100 serves with 144 attacks and 74 digs. Field Hockey

The Warriors played one game last week and lost 2-0 against North Branford on Sept. 27. The loss was Valley’s first on the season and put their record at 2-1-2.

North Branford has proven a tough matchup in the Shoreline Conference, and the Warriors played well against them, according to Head Coach Beth Powers.

“We played well. North Branford is incredibly strong this year as their record would indicate. I thought we put up a strong game seeing that North Branford has been beating people by many goals,” Powers said. “Although we’re never satisfied with a loss, I thought we played very strong and had a good showing against a tough team. I thought our play was wholly respectable.”

Warriors’ goaltender Mia Cost had 15 saves in the cage against the Thunderbirds.

Football

The Warriors were off last week as they look ahead to their home matchup against Pequot League rival Old Saybrook-Westbrook at Valley Regional High School on Friday, Oct. 6 at 6:30 p.m. Both teams enter the game with a record of 4-0.
