The Rams’ boys’ soccer team played two games against Shoreline Conference opponents last week and won both games to clinch a spot in the Class S State Tournament as quickly as possible with a record of 7-0.
On Sept. 25, Old Saybrook grabbed a 1-0 win on the road against Haddam-Killingworth.
Two days later, the Rams punched their postseason ticket with a 7-0 win over Hale-Ray. Old Saybrook netted its first goal at the 15:34 mark, when Justin Phillips scored on a helper from Austin Hilger. Then at 22:47, Anthony Karg put one in the net on an assist from Sebastiano Gallitto. About five minutes later, Karg scored an unassisted goal for Head Coach Sam Barnes’s club. After intermission, Phillips scored his second goal at 42:19, Christian Fox put one home on an assist from Hilger at 46:58, Hilger scored a goal at 57:32, and then Galvin Stuart scored Old Saybrook’s last goal off an assist from Tim Reid at 58:58. The Rams had 22 shots on goal against the Noises. Goalie Jonah Nucci made one save in the win.
Football
The Old Saybrook-Westbrook football team scored another decisive victory last week by defeating Lewis Mills 34-14 in a home contest on Sept. 30. OS-W now owns a record of 4-0 on the season.
The Rams got the scoring started with a 5-yard run by senior Cory Bartlett to take a 6-0 lead in the first quarter. OS-W rushed into the end zone a second time when senior Victor Pascoe broke off a 20-yard run. Pascoe followed by tossing the 2-point conversion to senior Vincent Dyer to make it 14-0 after one quarter. In the second quarter, OS-W got a 50-yard touchdown run from Pascoe, and Cooper Pavlovich’s extra point kick made it 21-0. Lewis Mills struck back with a touchdown that cut it to 21-7, but Old Saybrook wasn’t done in the first half, as Pascoe and Dyer connected for a big 64-yard TD pass and a 27-7 advantage.
After halftime, Lewis Mills struck with a touchdown pass and made it a 27-14 game. However, later in the third quarter, junior Danny Almada ran 43 yards into the end zone to extend the Rams’ lead to 34-14.
Pascoe completed 5-of-8 for 116 yards and a TD and also ran for 170 yards and two scores on 14 carries. Dyer added 61 yards on 10 carriers to go with his two receptions for 93 yards and a touchdown.
The Rams will next take on Pequot League rival Valley Regional-Old Lyme (4-0) at Valley Regional High School on Deep River at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 6.
Field Hockey
Old Saybrook played two games last week and got a split to put its record at 2-5 on the year.
On Sept. 26, Old Saybrook hosted Granby Memorial and lost 3-0. Then on Sept. 28, the Rams were at home to play Morgan and won 4-1.
