Volleyball

The Indians’ volleyball squad is now 9-0 after posting wins over Mercy and Shelton last week.

Guilford first swept Mercy 3-0 (25-17, 25-8, 25-17) to move to 4-0 in the SCC Oronoque Division. Trinity Flynn had six kills, Emma Appleman added four kills and three aces, Jess Decensi tacked on four kills, and Julia Hyman dished out 20 assists, along with three aces.

The Indians then swept Shelton aside by a 3-0 final on Sept. 27.

Field Hockey

Guilford took on Sacred Heart Academy (SHA) and Hamden High School last week and won both games to move their record to 5-0-1.

The Indians began the week with a 2-1 triumph over Sacred Heart Academy on Sept. 26. Guilford then defeated Hamden 2-1 in overtime on Sept. 29.

Guilford grabbed its win against SHA in the last six minutes with an unassisted goal by Ella Stanley. Hannah Tillier scored in the first half on an assist by Olivia Clarke. Goalie Nicolette Spotlow made three saves.

In the game against Hamden, the Indians triumphed by netting the winner with just four seconds left in overtime. Olivia Clarke took a penalty corner shot and Bryce Makula tipped home the goal into the top corner of the cage. Clarke had scored in the first half on a penalty corner with Makula getting the assist. Spotlow made 11 saves in goal.

Girls’ Soccer

The Indians tied Mercy and lost to Lauralton Hall in last week’s matchups. Guilford is 5-1-2 overall with a record of 3-0-1 in the SCC Hammonasset Division.

Guilford opened the week with a 1-1 tie with Mercy on Sept. 25. The Indians’ goal was scored by Lily Riccio (the first of her career) on an assist from Madison Gambardella. Guilford came out setting the tone early and had near-goals on a couple one-on-one opportunities. The Indians continued the half with strong possessions that were mostly slowed by Mercy’s offside traps.

In the second half, Guilford scored first in the 57th minute, when Gambardella lofted a pass to Riccio, who maintained control while fighting off defenders before scoring. Guilford then held off Mercy until the ball ended up bouncing in the box on a corner kick. Finally, the ball bounced Mercy’s way and was put in by Lindsay Stevenson with about 18 minutes left. Guilford pressed, but was unable to get the winning goal on a couple of opportunities, including a laser by Gambardella off the crossbar. Meghan Landon played net for Guilford.

“The feeling after the game was that this was a tough tie for the team. It was fair since we gave up the late goal and missed many scoring opportunities, but it also reflected the passion the players have towards making this season special,” said Head Coach Scott McMahon. “They know each game is important. We look forward on continuing to improve. As we near the halfway point of the season, we are both proud of our 5-0-2 record, but know we can do even better.”

The Indians closed the week with a 5-2 loss against Lauralton Hall on Sept. 29.
