Yellowjackets’ Volleyball Sweeps Week, Makes States; Football Loses to Xavier

Volleyball

The East Haven volleyball team swept all three of its matches last week to clinch a berth in the Class L State Tournament and improve to 9-1 on the season. The Yellowjackets recorded victories against Wilbur Cross, Hand, and Seymour in last week’s action.

East Haven started the week with a divisional matchup at Wilbur Cross and prevailed 3-0 (25-21, 25-13, 25-14) to move to 3-1 in its Housatonic contests. Kylie Schlottmn had a solid all-around game with six digs, five kills, and six aces for East Haven. Diana Kalman and fellow junior Cameron Cordaway added five kills apiece in the victory. Isabella Ragaini dished out 18 assists to go with eight digs for the Yellowjackets. Alannah Doheny landed seven aces, Julia SanGiovanni had four aces, and Megan Roberts punched up six digs.

Two days later, the Easties had a home match against Hand and prevailed 3-0 (25-11, 25-16, 25-14) over the Tigers. Schlottman had nine kills and 13 digs, Summer Onorato recorded 11 kills and eight digs, and Ragaini notched 23 assists to go with seven digs. Additionally, Doheny posted eight digs and six aces, SanGiovanni also had six aces, and Roberts had seven digs for East Haven.

The Yellowjackets wrapped up the week with a non-conference road tilt in Seymour and won 3-0 against the Wildcats.

Football

East Haven dropped to 1-3 by taking a 56-3 defeat at SCC Tier 1 opponent Xavier at Palmer Field in Middletown on Sept. 29. Evan Damian kicked a 23-yard field goal to cut Xavier’s lead to 14-3 late in the first quarter, but the Falcons scored the last six touchdowns of the game to run away with the victory.

Ryan Cordova made 11 tackles for the Yellowjackets. Andrew Luzzi had nine tackles, Michael Caruso made eight tackles, and Seth Proto had seven tackles.

The Yellowjackets’ next game is a home contest against fellow SCC Tier 3 foe Guilford at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 6. Guilford enters the game with a record of 2-1 overall and is 2-0 in Tier 3 play. East Haven is 1-1 in its Tier 3 games.

Girls’ Soccer

The Yellowjackets hosted rival Branford on Sept. 29 and dropped a 1-0 decision against the Hornets at East Haven High School. The Easties now have a record of 1-4-2 on the season.

Boys’ Soccer

East Haven played just one game last week when it faced Notre Dame-West Haven at Veteran’s Stadium on Sept. 26. The Yellowjackets lost a 7-1 decision against the Green Knights to move to 1-7 for the year.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

East Haven-Wilbur Cross (EH-WC) dropped contests to Lyman Hall and Law last week.

EH-WC began its week by competing against Lyman Hall at the East Haven Recreation Pool on Sept. 26 and lost 92-71. Laura Rosado claimed first place in the 200 individual medley (2:23.13) and the 100 backstroke (1:04.67) for EH-WC. Daniella Bedoya won the 100 butterfly (1:06.06), while JJ Kim was first in the 100 freestyle with a time of 58.29. Also, the 200 medley relay of Kim, Alora McCarroll, Bedoya, and Rosado finished first in 2:02.56.

The Yellowjackets were back at rec pool to face Law the following day and took a 97-65 defeat. Rosado placed first in the 200 IM (2:26.84) and the 500 freestyle (5:35.42) for EH-WC. Kim prevailed in the 100 freestyle (58.19) and 100 backstroke (1:09.16). The 200 medley relay of Kim, McCarroll, Gina DiVerniero, and Rosado finished first with a mark of 2:08, and those same four athletes also joined forces to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:53.49.

Girls’ Cross Country

East Haven had a recent quad-meet at Fitzgerald Trail in Woodbridge, where the Yellowjackets dropped 15-50 decisions versus Sheehan and Amity.

Nicole Pendziwater turned in the Easties’ best race of the day by taking 16th place with a time of 26 minutes and 21 seconds. Katie Maffeo placed 29th behind a time of 28:50 for the Yellowjackets. Also competing for East Haven were Rebecca Albert (44th, 34:13), Olivia Turek (45th, 35:09), Andreina Magana (46th, 35:09), Kayla Vernon (47th, 36:55), Paige Maffeo (49th, 39:08), and Olivia Angelo (50th, 39:08).

Boys’ Cross Country

The Yellowjackets competed against two teams at Fitzgerald Trail in Woodbridge on Sept. 26. East Haven lost contests against Amity and Sheehan by the score of 15-50 at the meet.

Anthony Mauro ran a time of 22 minutes and 53 seconds to finish in 35th place for East Haven. Ian Reynolds finished 38th (23:50), while Zach Vallas finished in 39th place at 23:54. The Yellowjackets’ pack also featured Jeff Maffeo (41st, 24:15), Giro Esposito (50th, 25:36), Radames Figueroa (51st, 26:55), and Joseph Castellano (52nd, 27:12).
