Football

The Haddam-Killingworth football team improved to 2-1 on the year after notching a 21-7 road win over Morgan on Sept. 22.

Kevin Dougherty rushed for 202 yards on 13 carries, including touchdown runs of 67 and 29 yards, to lead the Cougars’ attack. Dalton Modehn carried the ball 10 times for 52 yards and a touchdown, plus Jordan Callahan was 3-for-3 on extra points.

After two quick scores by H-K in the first quarter, the game tightened when Morgan (0-3) scored a touchdown in the second half and prevented the Cougars from scoring again until late in the game. With just less than two minutes remaining, Dougherty iced the game for H-K with his 29-yard TD run.

“Dalton Modehn, a sophomore running back and defensive back, has become a regular contributor for the Cougars on both sides of the ball. His impressive night carrying the ball was especially timely with starting running back Tobey Callender out with an arm injury,” said Head Coach Mike Baklik. “The kids took advantage early and then had a few mistakes here and there, but they hung tough for the entire game, especially on defense, and took care of business in the end.”

The Cougars next face Cromwell-Portland (3-0) at home on Thursday, Sept. 28 at 6:30 p.m.

Field Hockey

The Cougars earned their first victories of the year last week and are now 2-2.

H-K got in the win column with 4-0 shutout over Morgan on Sept. 18. The Cougars then edged out Canton by 2-1 margin on Sept. 20.

Boys’ Soccer

The Cougars went up against Coginchaug and Hale-Ray this past week, splitting the two matches to move to 4-1.

H-K took its first loss of the year by a 2-1 final against Coginchaug on Sept. 18. The Cougars then blanked Hale-Ray 5-0 on Sept. 22.

Girls’ Soccer

H-K took a pair of defeats last week and is now 0-4-1 overall on the year.

The Cougars dropped a 3-0 decision to Coginchaug on Sept. 19. H-K was then shutout, 4-0, by Wolcott on Sept. 21.

Volleyball

H-K won two of its three matchups last week and is now 5-2 on the campaign.

The Cougars grabbed their fourth straight victory with a 3-0 sweep of Old Lyme on Sept. 18. H-K then took a 3-1 loss to Lyman Memorial on Sept. 20. After that, the Cougars then swept North Branford 3-0 on Sept. 22.

Boys’ and Girls’ Cross Country

On Sept. 16, the H-K cross country program split up its squads as the varsity boys and girls traveled to Bear Mountain, New York to compete in the Suffern Invitational, while the JV teams went to Cromwell to compete in the Connecticut River Valley Invitational.

The H-K boys’ varsity team, which is currently ranked seventh in Connecticut, competed in the Varsity C race and won the team title by scoring 52 points to defeat the 24 other teams. The team was led by a duo of Cougars who placed first and second for the three-mile race. Andrew Meredith won the race in a time of 16:09 and was followed closely by fellow senior tri-captain Jonah Spector, who ran 16:10. Finishing behind them were fellow seniors Dan Schumann (8th, 16:37) and Conor McCabe (14th, 17:05). H-K’s pack of runners was rounded out by junior Seth Freeman (27th, 17:30), senior captain Kurt Sodergren (29th, 17:31), and junior Kyle Criscuolo (30th, 17:35).

The Cougars’ girls’ varsity team placed second in the Varsity C race by scoring 60 points and losing a close race to Tappan Zee from New York. The girls were led by senior captain Kelsey D’Amico, who finished sixth in a time of 19:58 and was followed by senior Julie Kelly, who placed eighth with a mark of 20:04 on the challenging three-mile course. Following them across the line were senior captain Lexie Bouthillier (11th, 20:51), senior Grace Lindell (17th, 21:18), junior Emma Anziano (20th, 22:11) and senior captain Maggie Fisher (37th, 23:04).

Also last week, Haddam-Killingworth’s JV boys’ and girls’ teams competed at the Connecticut River Valley Invitational in Cromwell, where both clubs were victorious. The boys squad swept the first 10 places to lead the team to a perfect 15-point score. The Cougars were led, in order, by Alex Inkel, Michael Callis, Matt Jennings, Owen Howes, Brad Rakowski, Christian Uzwiak, Nate Carlson, Tuckerman Wink, Nate Petras, and Fisher Harris.

The JV girls also placed first as a team with 32 points and were paced by freshman Meara Bodak, who took the top spot with a time of 22:56, as well as Alex Zupan, Ava Lindell, Lauren D’Amico, and Lizzy Overchuk to round out the top five.
