The Guilford football team is now 2-0 after posting a 23-21 home win against Creed-Career-Whitney Tech (C-C-W) on Sept. 22.

Guilford started the scoring with a safety, and then a strong methodical drive led to a 4-yard touchdown run by Jack Strand (11-of-29 passing for 169 yards, 1 TD). The Indians added to their 9-0 lead with a running touchdown by AJ Moscato and his subsequent 2-point conversion. C-C-W (1-2) then intercepted a tipped Strand pass that gave the visitors the ball at Guilford’s 10-yard line. C-C-W scored four plays later, right before halftime.

The Panthers got the ball to open the third quarter and scored on a 60-yard counter, closing the gap to 23-14. After Guilford punted, C-C-W drove down the field for 1st-and-goal from the 5. The Panthers eventually rushed for a score on fourth down, and the extra point cut the Indians’ lead to 23-21. At that point, the game became a gut-check for Guilford as Strand had to leave due to an injury, and sophomore Ethan Vashal took over as the signal caller. Guilford’s defense got a turnover that halted a C-C-W drive. The Indians ultimately had to punt and prepare for their final defensive stand. The Indians’ sealed the victory when their defense came up with a stop on 4th-and-inches from their own 28-yard line.

“Once again, another total team effort,” said Head Coach Anthony M. Avallone. “One play that really stood out was when one of our captains, Carter Cox, tipped a sure touchdown at the last second to force Creed to keep driving. It eventually led to our final stop. Many bright spots, but many items still in need of lots of improvement.”

Sean Russell led the Indians with four catches for 44 yards. Following him were Tyler Filley (2 receptions, 33 yards) and Corey Sondak (3 catches, 23 yards). As for the rushing game, the Indians had 44 carries for 213 yards, averaging 4.8 yards a run.
